Training
What to expect from low carbon training? T
Martyn Bridges, director of technical services, discusses industry plans for low carbon training Training available
he industry is evolving, with new legislation and technology being introduced frequently to help meet net zero targets.
As a result, it will be important to ensure
installers are upskilled to stay on top of the rollout of new technology and to ensure they have access to relevant training courses to assist them.
The current state of the industry
In the last five decades, Worcester Bosch has been offering training to installers, service engineers and classifiers. Throughout our history, some of the products we have brought to market have been a radical departure from pre-existing products in the market. As a consequence of this innovation, in the
early stages of our development it was clear we had to offer training courses to coach and advise engineers on how our applications differ. There is currently an overwhelming hunger
from the industry for low carbon training as the industry has a goal to reach the Net Zero target by 2050. The aim is to convert heating and hot water systems to a low carbon or even to a zero-carbon source.
At Worcester Bosch we have started to offer the OFQUAL heat pump association training course combined with the CIPHE low temperature heating design course. This offering has led to an immense number of enquiries and we are currently scheduling as many courses as possible to try and accommodate for this demand. As the years progress, such a demand will also
grow into one for hydrogen boiler training courses as another alternative technology that is likely to go ahead.
Initiatives and incentives
Offering the OFQUAL qualifications would enable installers to register with MCS, which would give installers access to any grants or subsidies that are currently available. One such initiative is the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) which is currently running. An installer would need to be MCS registered to offer the £5,000 grant to homeowners who have expressed an interest in swapping their boiler for a heat pump. Training throughout the industry over the next
few years is almost certainly likely to adapt to work with low carbon technologies, heat pumps, hydrogen, solar, and heat interface units, which will all be available from most manufacturers.
