OFTEC SOUNDS THE ALARM ON ENERGY PLANNING
F
ollowing the chaos caused by the Beast from the East across the UK, OFTEC raised its concerns regarding the viability of aspects of the
Government’s energy plans for the future. The impact of the recent extreme cold weather on the
country’s energy supply should raise important questions for politicians as they consider the pathways towards future decarbonised energy, says OFTEC. The concerns over maintaining electricity supplies and whether natural gas would run out during the big freeze were, in the main, unfounded. However, the situation could have been very diff erent indeed if the UK was heavily dependent on electricity for heat and transport, as outlined in many decarbonisation proposals. A combination of prolonged extreme weather, low
temperatures and low wind speeds would place enormous strain on the grid’s ability to generate suffi cient electricity from renewable sources. This, combined with a spike in demand, could leave
many without heat, light or transport – just when it is needed most. OFTEC chief executive Paul Rose, said: “Fuel security
should be high on the list of priorities when energy planners and politicians are thinking about how to decarbonise our energy needs. “The recent cold spell put severe strain on natural gas supplies and both oil and coal were required to help produce power at the major power stations. “Many policy advisors have advocated a shift to
decarbonised electricity for our future energy and transport needs. “However, relying on one fuel type may leave us
vulnerable over the winter months, particularly during extreme weather conditions which are expected to become more commonplace in our increasingly unpredictable climate. “At OFTEC, we believe that no single solution can meet society’s future energy needs. “Embracing a broad mix of energy sources would
reduce risk and we advocate an approach which would see a combination of low carbon liquid fuels, gas, biomass and electricity.” “While OFTEC in principal supports the Government’s
desire to reduce carbon emissions, this cannot be at the expense of energy security.”
DAIKIN BRINGS TWO MAJOR LAUNCHES TO UK MARKET
D
aikin UK has announced the arrival of two new off erings in the form of a gas condensing
boiler and its Altherma 3 heat pump range.
In a bid to become a serious player in the highly competitive domestic heating market, the business has launched the Daikin D2CND gas condensing boiler, combining ultra-compact dimensions, quality components, smart control and contemporary style, Available as a combi or with cylinder connection to meet all hot water demands, the D2CND gas condensing boiler delivers an A rating for heating and A+++ for hot water when combined with solar thermal products.
The D2CND is designed with installers in mind, off ering a small footprint, low lift weight and easy connections for simple installation. For added fl exibility, the adaptive gas
valve works with either natural gas or LPG and fl ue runs of up to 11m can be achieved.
Commenting on the latest addition to Daikin UK’s range, Iain Bevan, commercial director for heating and renewables at Daikin UK said: “We’ve worked hard to develop a highly effi cient boiler that’s one of the most compact in the market, off ers smart control and has contemporary styling to suit modern homes. “End users will enjoy low operating
costs due to its high effi ciency whilst our installers are assured of a plug- and-play replacement with easy connections for simple installation – we believe it’s a win-win for everyone.”
He told journalists at a recent launch that Daikin hoped to grow its network of installers to become familiar with some of Daikin’s renewable technologies by off ering a product they were already
comfortable with installing. “This is a big step for Daikin to get into boilers which we will sell directly to gas safe registered installers.” The boiler is available in 24, 28 and
35 kW models and has a compact size of just 400 x 255 x 580mm for the 24kW model and 450 x 288 x 666mm for the 28 and 35kW models. Meanwhile, the Daikin Altherma 3
constitutes the fi rst ever air-to-water heat pump powered by the low global warming potential (GWP) refrigerant, R32.
Mr Bevan said: “The Altherma 3 is
the result of extensive development work and really sets a whole new standard for domestic air to water heat pumps. As the fi rst heat pump to use R32, Altherma 3 represents the future of this market and provides a system that will ensure lower environmental impact and greater maintenance reliability throughout the F-Gas phase down.”
