Ventilation covered

Ventilation specialist Titon is a leading competitor particularly in new build and social housing ventilation applications. Here HVR finds out more about the company’s work in the sector, its range of products and the common challenges it overcomes

What is Titon to the UK HVAC market?

Titon is a market leader for domestic ventilation, with over 45 years’ experience in supplying ventilation products and window and door hardware to countries all over the world. It invests extensively in manufacturing, research, and development facilities, keeping the company at the forefront of new technology and ensuring innovative products at competitive prices. Focusing primarily on new build and social housing, Titon works with house

builders to assist in compliance with certain aspects of Building Regulations and Standards, particularly ventilation in housing. Titon also has dedicated sales teams for its ventilation and hardware divisions, which cover the whole of the UK, supported by the company’s head office in Colchester, Essex with full administration and marketing departments. Additionally, a state-of-the-art manufacturing base at Haverhill is home to its production, research and development departments. Titon places a strong emphasis on quality, testing and customer service and is also affiliated to a number of industry organisations. In addition to its UK activities, Titon exports its products to a range of overseas

markets, throughout Europe and beyond. The USA market is supplied through its wholly owned subsidiary: Titon Inc. Elsewhere, Titon has appointed distributors within most major world markets, with whom it works closely.

Describe the range of products you supply?

Titon manufactures and supplies a range of products, including sophisticated energy efficient whole-house mechanical ventilation units, natural ventilation products and fittings for window and doors. The company’s range also includes high performance and specialist products designed for demanding building projects, where noise, air pollution and/or indoor air quality are prime concerns.

Titon’s MVHR units offer whole-house ventilation, while protecting a home from harmful contaminants. Its latest model, the HRV3 PH ECOaura has also successfully achieved Passivhaus accreditation. These MVHR products are complemented by Titon’s CME (or MEV, continuously running central extract) systems, which are suitable for the continuous extract of stale, damp and polluted air to the outside environment. Plus, the company has continued to expand its product portfolio, with the award- winning Trimbox NO2 Filter, which has been developed to complement its MVHR units to combat the high levels of nitrogen dioxide found in exhaust gases from diesel engines in urban areas.

Which of your products/services are in high demand?

For 45 years, Titon’s core product has been the window trickle (or ‘background’) ventilator, with the company renowned as one of the biggest manufacturers and supplier of these products in the UK. Titon maintains a leading position through constant research and product development, ensuring it can offer one of the largest range of trickle vents – having sold over 50 million vents to date. Titon's trickle ventilators assist in compliance with ventilation regulations in the UK & overseas, and are suitable for all types of window – including timber, aluminium or PVCu, offering increased ventilation. As a result, specifiers can pick Titon products to ensure compliance for a choice of ventilation systems in different dwelling types, without constant specification changes. Additionally, fabricators can remain safe in the knowledge that only the minimum number of ventilators required need to be used to achieve compliance.

What are the modern day HVAC challenges you face?

In order to improve energy efficiency, buildings are becoming more airtight so as to reduce heat loss. However, this can impact on indoor air quality (IAQ) – which is where MVHR systems have a key role to play. After all, a healthy ventilation strategy with adequate filtration is crucial, with buildings essentially acting similarly to a lung – drawing in polluted air from outside before ‘breathing out’ processed and filtered indoor air. IAQ can be significantly improved via effective ventilation, with MVHR

systems removing moisture and airborne contaminants, resulting in a healthier indoor environment for occupants. Additionally, Titon now produces specially designed Trimbox NO2 filters, which can be added to an MVHR system and remove pollutants being produced by diesel engines. These pollutants include sulphur dioxide, hydrogen sulphide, hydrogen chloride and chlorine. NO2 filters also help combat ammonia odours, while absorbing VOCs and solvents.

What are your future plans?

Although Brexit is the major looming political change, we do not believe it will have an adverse effect on the Titon business in the short term. Looking ahead longer term, however, things are harder to predict. On one hand, we are a UK manufacturer, with very good cost

control measures and a strong UK supply chain; however, we do source some
