Technical Manager Mohamed then presented case studies demonstrating that A2L systems are not experimental, and they are already operating at scale. “We are speaking about actual refrigeration in real life…

with several years of feedback and experience,” he said. He highlighted R455A as a leading option for both medium and lowtemperature applications. With a GWP of 146 and strong thermodynamic performance, it is suitable for condensing units, centralised systems and waterloop architectures. One UK example came from Iceland Foods, which commissioned a full MT/LT installation using R455A in 2023. The system uses semidistributed condensing units with limited charge sizes and glycol circuits for resilience. After nearly a year of operation, the retailer reported 10–15% energy savings compared with its previous R407F system. Further examples from France, Germany and the Netherlands reinforced the message that A2Ls are mature, safe and commercially viable.

Beyond refrigerants Throughout the day, speakers returned to the importance of managing leaks. With refrigerant value rising sharply under the phasedown, leaks carry both environmental and fi nancial consequences. Harper summarised it simply: “It’s all about containment… refrigerant today has a massive value with it.”

Sessions from Bacharach and other partners explored leak detection technologies, safety requirements under EN378, and the need for robust maintenance regimes. Energy effi ciency was also framed as a wholesystem challenge. Solstice outlined four pillars: refrigerant choice, system design, maintenance, and controls and optimisation. Mechanical subcooling, oilfree centrifugal compression,

heat recovery integration and highperformance A2L plugins were all highlighted as emerging opportunities. By the close of the event, the message was consistent

across all speakers: ■HighGWP refrigerants are approaching the end of their life. ■Reclaimed product will help, but only for a limited time. ■A 2L refrigerants are the longterm solution for most com- mercial applications.

■Energy effi ciency must be considered alongside GWP. ■ Installers must guide customers now, before supply con- straints force disruptive change.

Harper summed up Climalife’s position: “We’re here to help you… we’ve got the right products, the equipment, service, knowledge and technical assistance.”

The day closed with a Q&A session and an invitation to continue discussions over an evening social, an opportunity for contractors, suppliers and manufacturers to share experiences and prepare for the next phase of the industry’s transition.

“You have to try and get your

customers to make those decisions.”
