CASE STUDIES

Unico and Vaillant deliver strong COP in retrofi t fi rst

A large bungalow has undergone a new type of HVAC replacement that has combined UNICO’s 3-in-1 heating, ventilation and cooling system, with a Vaillant Air Source Heat Pump and its supporting controls.

T

he homeowner’s main priorities when looking into an HVAC system were to avoid the costly installation and disruption of underfl oor heating with an aim to minimise the bungalow’s carbon footprint, to maximise both energy effi ciency and year-round comfort for all weather conditions. The Unico System’s 3-in-1 heating, cooling and ventilation and cooling capability stood out for homeowner Matt Inch, whose research led him to local contractor JLN Plumbing Heating & Electrics, a registered Unico System Specialist Partner (USP) and an accredited Vaillant Advance Heat Pump installer, which enabled this industry fi rst in combining the two technologies that have given such a standout COP result.

A customised HVAC system was designed for the bungalow, with the compact positioned in the loft and the main central duct confi gured in a U-shape

layout above all the rooms. Heated or cooled air is delivered via multiple branches of fully insulated and sound attenuated fl exible supply ducting to 25 ceiling-mounted round room outlets throughout the accommodation. Just 89mm in diameter, the size and fl exibility of the ducting provided more layout options and easier installation, which took only fi ve days to complete in its entirety. The integration of the Unico System with the

Vaillant aroTHERM Plus 7kw Heat Pump, together with its complementary control system, has resulted in an even, year-round internal temperature that takes into account the exterior temperature, yet also gives the option for the homeowner to adjust the internal temperature if required. In particular, the draft-free, even cooling that the Unico System provided during the hot 2025 summer has been particularly welcomed by the owner.

Notable savings on the home’s electricity bills are

already being achieved with a heating rate of 4.4 Coeffi cient of Performance (COP) in March 2025, a 3.2 hot water COP in May and a 4.8 cooling COP in July, with the heat pump producing 4.8 units of cooling for every one unit of electricity consumed.

Carrier Solutions refi ts Toshiba

climate control at Bannatyne Spa Carrier Solutions UK supplied a Toshiba climate control solution for Bannatyne Health Club & Spa in Wellingborough, delivering a complete HVAC refurbishment.

T

he eight-week project involved decommissioning and removing ageing R407c split systems that had reached the end of their useful lives. These systems were proving costly for Bannatyne Group to maintain, making a modern replacement essential to enhance performance and reduce operating expenses. Ventec Services, the appointed installation

contractor, selected Toshiba products for their high effi ciency, reliability and tailored climate control capabilities. Equipment was procured through one of Carrier’s preferred distributors, Cool Designs Ltd, ensuring a smooth and reliable supply chain throughout the project.

The installed solution included Toshiba Variable

Refrigerant Flow (VRF) systems, featuring SMMSu Heat Pump 2-pipe and SHRMe Heat Recovery 3-pipe models, as well as Toshiba Digital Inverter R32

single, twin and triple split units. The project also replaced outdated DX cooling coils and condensing units within the club’s air handling units. Key features of the new installation include inverter-driven compressors, which adjust heating and cooling output in response to real-time demand, thereby reducing power consumption during periods of low usage. A Toshiba Black Pear Central Controller was also installed, allowing the club’s

General Manager to control diff erent temperature settings across the gym, studios, spa areas and offi ces from within the main offi ce. Careful planning ensured the project was completed outside opening hours, thereby minimising disruption to daily operations. “Working with Ventec and Carrier Solutions UK

ensured a hassle-free installation,” said Stuart Maclachlan, Regional Manager at Bannatyne Group. “The Toshiba system has improved comfort, and both members and staff have noticed the diff erence.” Richard Goose, Director of Ventec Services, added:

“The collaboration between Ventec, Bannatyne and Carrier Solutions UK made this project a great success and we’re proud to have delivered a solution that exceeds client expectations.” www.toshiba-aircon.co.uk
