COMPANY PROFILE

New builds, by contrast, are straightforward. “Absolutely perfect,” Spencer Bell said. His daughter recently moved into a new home with a heat pump, and her experience has reinforced his belief in the value of strong aftercare. “That’s what you buy into,” he said. “You’re not just buying the box, you’re buying the service package behind it.”

Technology, policy and the long view Bell’s journey into renewables began during lockdown, when the company had no involvement in the sector. “We did no renewable energy products at all at the time,” he said. “But I thought, we’ve got to do something, even if it’s just our little bit. Let’s try to be better, let’s try to sell better solutions to housing, because having a gas boiler is not the future.” Government incentives helped build momentum, though

Bell remains wary of political volatility. “Let’s just hope next week she doesn’t change her mind and scrap it,” he said of the Boiler Upgrade Scheme. “The government can do whatever it pleases, and we pay the costs for it.” Despite the uncertainties, he is optimistic about the

direction of heat pump technology. “Where they’ve come from in the last 10 years is incredible. Give it another 10

years, and they’ll be smaller, quieter, better,” he said, “and they’ll be able to fi t in everybody’s house. It’s quite scary, really, how fast they’re moving.” For James Bell, the future also lies in systems that

integrate heating, cooling and air quality. He highlighted the Unico system on display, which combines low-level heating and cooling with air purifi cation. “What’s unique is the pipe system,” he said. “You can do a maximum of four zones, but that doesn’t mean four cassettes. If you’ve got two cassettes in one room, that’s one zone.” For all the technology on display, the Renewable Energy

Warehouse is ultimately about people, installers who need guidance, homeowners who need honest advice, and a business owner who would rather stay out of the limelight but recognises the importance of stepping forward. “You can ask me anything,” Spencer Bell said, “and I’ll tell you the truth. It might not be what you want to hear, but it will be the truth.” In a sector where misinformation, poor installations and

unrealistic expectations have clouded public understanding, that commitment may be the most valuable asset REW brings to the transition ahead.

“If you came into us and said, I want to buy a heat pump, we would ask the question: ‘Who’s fi tting it for you?’” Bell said. “We won’t just sell to anybody.”
