Slitting and Rewinding

How to spool a wide range of sticky products on a single machine?

O

ur customer, who visited us for the fi rst time on the last edition of ICE show, is one of the major adhesive tapes manufacturers with more

than 50 years’ experience and 700 employees worldwide. Involved in diff erent markets such as industrial sector, building, stationery and packaging, our customer manufactures a very wide range of products foam adhesive tapes, aluminium tapes, masking paper, doubled side adhesive material, PVC PET MOPP tapes and so on. Its issue? To transform on a single machine this wide range of products with thickness from 30μm up to 1mm, into narrow strips of minimum 6 mm to a maximum of 30mm widths by unwinding them, slitting them and spooling the cut strips. Its expectations could be summarised in 4

points: 1- To be assured of a highly productive process with a modular machine.

2- To be assured of the quality of the fi nished rolls by keeping product strips straight with no deviation or distortion.

3- To minimise the side waste material after being slit. 4- To produce spools with a high unwinding quality for the downstream process.

Thanks to the Spoolex Testing room equipped with all our technologies, we have been able to

run trials to defi ne the best cutting and rewinding solutions to answer our customer expectations. We run the fi rst test with our conventional spooling technology, using a fi xed spooling head and movable arm, but the results were not fulfi lling enough for our team to ensure high quality and easy unwinding operations on the downstream process. Due to the diff erent product widths, their fragility and strips tension, we decided to switch to our self-traverse winding solution with our Gemini spooling line. This self-traversing technology allowed ensuring perfect spools quality and geometry whilst keeping the strip integrity. To guarantee consistent results and minimise side waste, our R&D engineers and process specialists have developed new and innovative technologies to optimise spool edges and sides stability. Spool edges are critical to stabilise downstream process and to ease handling operations. Thanks to our new spooling laws, our machine is able to ensure spools with perfect stable fl anges. This stability of fi nished spool off ers lots of advantages such as allowing higher spool diameter, even with thick and narrow products, but also avoiding edge damage during handling and transportation. Reliability and consistency of de-spooling is also ensured in the fi nal process, avoiding strip sliding/ fall-out for instance. Another issue with adhesive

tapes is its intrinsic property: its sticking power. Indeed, during the threading phase, the strips stick everywhere on the machine, which can easily become a headache for the operator. To stop strips sticking, we equipped our line with a separate plastic fi lm unwinder used during the threading mode of the line.

Finally, based on our modular concept, this digital spooling line is equipped with: • A separate, ergonomic and user-friendly shaftless and soundproof unwinder

• Two cutting technologies with the cost-eff ective razor blades slitting, minimum slitting width 10 mm, for plastic and MOPP fi lms and the precise shear cutting, minimum slitting width 6 mm, for aluminised product with liner • 48 spooling digital heads for fully customised spools; conical, pineapple, step-winding, up to 350xw350mm.

Our capacity to run trials was a turning point to answer our customer’s expectations, as well as showing them our spooling technology running with their own products. Then, our R&D department and the expertise of our process engineers brought innovative and relevant solutions to solve technical issues related to our customer specifi c product and process characteristics. Feel free to challenge us again!
