Coating and Laminating
options have expanded the functionality of the coater as they work towards development of their “Goliath”
solid-state pouch cell, a product tailored towards the automotive market which exhibits much improved safety when compared with liquid electrolyte equivalents. In no time at all, the team at Ilika have been able to learn how to run and maintain the machine and have benefi tted from the responsive technical support off ered through E+R’s service department.
With the clear buzz around battery development in recent years, E+R have capitalised on their many years of experience of large, production scale coating machinery to come up with a product which sits well in the pilot scale niche, answering the needs of its customers, whether they be research institutes or commercial clients. Recent news headlines in the technology sector show the folly of targeting giga-scale developments with unproven technology and the latest trends for carrying out R&D at the more sustainable pilot scale appear to be proving a more resilient approach in getting products to market and bridging the
innovation “valley of death”.
In the year since its launch, E+R Group have not sat idle but have most recently added inline calendering to its Genesis Air platform, again a response to the needs of battery innovators who need to pack as much fl exibility as possible into valuable fl oor space. With partners for key components such as dryers and slot dies each allowing their own premium, industry-leading solutions to be integrated in to the platform, E+R Group are confi dent that they can off er a product and service which is without equal in their fi eld. About our customer: Ilika plc (LON: IKA) is a pioneer in a ground-breaking solid state battery technology designed to meet the specifi c demands of a wide range of applications in medical tech, industrial IoT, electric vehicles and consumer electronics.
Ilika was founded in 2004 as a spin-out from the School of Chemistry at the University of Southampton. The company quickly established an international reputation for the rapid development of novel materials and secured commercial partnerships with a portfolio of blue-chip
companies including Asahi Kasei, Shell, Applied Materials, Toyota and Murata.
In 2014, Ilika started designing the Stereax family of mm-scale solid state batteries for medical implants and industrial IoT devices. The Stereax M300 for medical implants was the fi rst product to be developed and it has been successfully transferred to Cirtec Medical for manufacturing under license. In 2018, Ilika began developing its larger format Goliath solid state batteries designed for electric vehicles, with initial prototypes released for customer evaluation earlier in 2024 and next generation prototypes made on the Ilika pilot line, including the E&R Genesis Air, scheduled for release in 2025.
Ilika’s Denis Pasero, product commercialisation manager, commented, “We are delighted with the Genesis Air coater and the support given by E&R. We look forward to further close collaboration as we upgrade the coater’s functionality to deliver continuous improvement of our process in readiness for licensing our product for manufacturing”.
