Cutting Systems

C&T launch PlayMatrix cutting systems C

&T Channel Matrix (C&T), a manufacturer of creasing matrix, will be selling the PlayMatrix 4.0, an

automatic creasing matrix cutting system, across the UK with immediate effect. This Italian manufactured electronic machine, made by Mito, is for accurate cutting of creasing matrix. It is composed of six different tracks and is able to cut and store six reels at the same time. It has a measuring and transport system, an adjustable driving device for each track and a cutting device. It can be used in manual mode to cut single pieces, or a series of pieces of the same size, or in automatic mode to cut different sizes and different types of creasing matrix, through the use of instructions generated by manual input or by reading of a DXF file. The PlayMatrix 4.0 machine is unique to the UK and is ideal for boxmakers and large users of creasing matrix.

REDUCING MAKE READY TIME Speaking exclusively to Converter, Simon Shenton, managing director of C&T Channel Matrix says: “The Playmatrix machine responds to the ever increasing need to reduce make ready time. A large die format could have up to 300 individual pieces of matrix on it which would need to be hand

cut to length and mitre cut. All of this takes time when done manually. “The beauty of this machine is that it takes

the design of the die in the form of the CAD file and automatically cuts the pieces to be applied perfectly to length. This reduces the amount of time to make ready and hence increases the up time on machine. These days machine time is literally money. There is a further benefit and this relates to scrap and waste. If you purchase matrix in 75cm lengths, the typical format when purchasing matrix in boxes, there will also be some matrix waste and pieces of matrix which are not suitable as they are too short. The Playmatrix completely eliminates wasted pieces as it relies on matrix being fed on a reel. Every piece is used and there is no scrap or waste, thus saving the customer money in matrix scrappage. He concludes: “We have taken the decision to stock and distribute these machines. They represent great benefits over manual cutting of reduced wastage and less labour time and give more accurate and efficient cutting. With a relatively low cost of around £10k, we have calculated that these machines can give a ROI in approximately 12 months.”

unwind/ splice and rewind units to its two Gallus RCS 430 narrow web combination presses. The company is known for roll labels, sales folders, brochures, special- effect cards and unusual 3D advertising material for point of sale in the sheet fed and roll to roll printing sectors. The company, which is now part of the Hamburg based H O Persiehl Group, is located in Versmold near Hanover. Main markets for self-adhesive labels include spices, smoothies, and meat. Current managing director Michael Leon

G

takes up the story: “When I joined, the production floor was lacking investment in new technology. For me, automation offered the key to productivity, and that’s how we found ourselves talking to Martin Automatic at Labelexpo Brussels in 2017.” Kolbe-Coloco offers a wide variety of

roll- and sheet-fed printed products in a range of print techniques including digital, but it was the installation of a Gallus RCS 430 in 2012 that pushed the production of self-adhesive labels to a completely new level. The Gallus RCS is a highly specified all-servo 12-colour press, with a

combination of offset, flexo and screen all inline. It was joined in 2017 by a second 9- colour RCS 430. Capable of producing very sophisticated work, the Gallus presses were nevertheless lacking efficiency with the frequent roll changes required. “We knew we had one of the most flexible presses available but needed more continuous production than manual roll changes could offer. So, we spoke with Martin Automatic,” he explains. The result was a decision to order two

sets of Martin Automatic MBS automatic unwind/splice units and LRD rewinders for both of the Gallus RCS presses. In order to fit the non-stop unwind,

Kolbe-Coloco removed the original unwind unit from one of its RCS 430s to replace it with the Martin MBS splicer. On the second Gallus, the floorspace allowed the company to keep the existing unwinder, and the new non-stop splicer has been added to the existing unit. “When installing the Gallus RCS presses we did have in mind to add non-stop automation at a later stage,” Michael Leon comments, “so it was helpful that Martin Automatic offered flexible solutions to retrofit their units into an established production environment.” Kolbe-Coloco intends to continue its

policy of investment, which in addition to the Martin Automatic and Gallus machinery installed, has also seen a Heidelberg Speedmaster added to its sheet-fed offset stable in 2018, along with a three-colour Mark Andy P3 flexo press, also fitted with Martin unwind/splice technology and a turret rewind for non- stop production of finished rolls.
