Luxury Packaging

is often traditional; the informational content contains the product biography and may even be historically themed. Labels may incorporate intricate illustrative elements, which invite close up inspection. Colours may include toned down reds, earthy browns and restrained blues. It goes almost without saying that colour must be consistent and that those printers and converters charged with making a design concept a reality must be at the top of their game.

Glass is the traditional primary packaging container. Glass is non porous and impermeable; glass is effective in keeping gases out and there is no risk of spoilage. Designers utilise the surface of the glass to add texture, bottles may also be shaped to the point whereby the shape of the bottle becomes an integral part o the brand image. Secondary packaging for gifting must

convey the essence of the brand and must be recognisably that of the brand owner. Choice of print process is important with many display packs printed UV flexo or gravure printed. Value added processes include die cutting, embossing and coating. A wide range of materials including

carton board, metal, wood, leather and plastic are employed in the production of presentation boxes. Irrespective of the packaging medium or mediums used by the



packaging technologist, label converter and others must be innovative in their endeavour to ensure that every element works together.

LOGO LOCO Thought must be given to shape retention, resistance to crush and breakage and pack security, as well as to issues associated with printability, rub resistance, scuff and chemical resistance, gloss, durability, etc. When elements such as colour, logo and symbols are combined effectively they symbolise the values associated with the brand and represent a guarantee of sorts that the product will deliver the expected experience. Interpreting the colour and getting it right

time after time and run after run remains a challenge. Colour communication and proofing devices such as the GP100 plays an important role in ensuring that colour is accurate in the gravure print process. This device developed and manufactured by RK Print Coat Instruments can seamlessly be integrated in with gravure production workflows using inks of press viscosity. The GP100 can produce proofs from any flexible substrate and can be used for R & D, computer colour matching and for the production of customer presentation samples. In operation, ink is transferred from

an electronically engraved printing plate directly onto the substrate, which is attached to a rubber roller. Doctor blade and roller adjustments are made pneumatically, allowing for ease of repeatable settings. The portfolio of colour communication and

test and monitoring devices available from RK include pilot coating, printing and laminating systems such as the Rotary Koater and flagship VCM. Colour communication, sampling or proofing devices include multi print process systems such as the K Printing Proofer which produces high quality flexo, gravure and gravure-offset proofs and the FlexiProof family of devices for users and producers of flexographic inks. The most recent addition to the FlexiProof family is the FlexiProof LED UV. The FlexiProof and variants can be used to

determine printability, how inks and substrates perform and interact over time. They can be used for colour matching off press and resolving ink and other issues easily and quickly which in turn produces savings in waste, energy, costs and production press downtime. An area of commonality is that a FlexiProof can be used to trial new or unfamilar materials rather than a company having to take a flexo production press away from its main purpose, that of generating income.
