Smurfit Kappa’s eSmart service at the forefront of e-commerce packaging solutions

Smurfit Kappa, the packaging solutions company, has announced that it is now working with 70 per cent of leading European e-retail brands, and has revealed the new name for its e-retail offering: eSmart. This system aims to help e-retailers to optimise opportunities in the online sales space. eSmart guides companies through 12 key areas relating to the optimisation of e-retail processes, supply chain efficiency and the delivery of a superior consumer experience. Edwin Goffard, COO corrugated Europe, said, “As online sales grow and consumer

expectations evolve in an increasingly digitalised world, the pressure is on for brand owners and e-retailers to stand out from the crowd. Packaging plays a vital role in helping businesses grow profitably, manage supply chain complexity, and deliver the right brand experience.” “By bringing our e-retail offering together under the eSmart umbrella, we are making it

even simpler for companies to find the packaging solutions that make business sense. We are delighted to partner with so many leading online retailers including Zalando and CDiscount and we look forward to working with more brands to help them unlock the opportunities that will support future success.” Additionally, thanks to the eSmart service, leading food delivery service HelloFresh was able to optimise its e-retail process with a solution that not only delivered a superior customer experience but increased packing space by 17 per cent and pallet fill by 13 per cent. Luke Grob, product and innovation director at HelloFresh, said, “It is essential for us to always

keep our customers at the heart of everything we do. At each step of the design process, Smurfit Kappa shared our vision and passion for customer-centric attention to detail.”

Sofidel awards the most sustainable suppliers

Sofidel’s second Suppliers Sustainability Awards, the 3SAwards, has awarded its partners for sustainability commitments and achievements. The paper group held the second edition of the awards on November 9. These annual

awards acknowledge suppliers that have opted to incorporate environmental and social sustainability actions into their businesses. It was held at the East Wintergarden in London with guest speaker Dame Ellen

MacArthur. She said, “I was delighted to speak at the Sofidel Suppliers Sustainability Award ceremony to share my story and be a part of this important step from Sofidel to help improve sustainability across their full supply chain, which supports our shared value to accelerate the transition to a circular economy.” Sofidel has always made sustainability a measure of growth, aiming to minimise its

environmental impact and maximise social benefits. To date, the Group has reduced direct emissions of CO2 into the atmosphere to 19.1 per cent, limited the use of water resources within production processes (7.0 l/ kg compared to a benchmark of 15-25 l/kg), and obtained 100 per cent of its cellulose supplies from certified third party with certified forestry schemes (FSC, FSC Controlled Wood, SFI, PEFC). Attention to environmental and social sustainability goes beyond the impacts of the

Group’s production, which is committed to contributing to the achievement of the United Nations’ sixth sustainable development goal — ensuring water and sanitation for everyone — through collaboration with WaterAid, a non-governmental association based in the UK.

BOBST receives FEFCO 2017 Gold Award for innovation

BOBST has been presented with the FEFCO Gold Award for Best Innovation 2017 for its Premium Gap Control at this year’s European Federation of Corrugated Board Manufacturers (FEFCO) Technical Seminar. The BOBST Premium Gap Control is an independent unit positioned after the counter ejector on the Flexo

Folder Gluer. It ensures that 100 per cent of delivered boxes are folded with total quality and to exact specifications, bringing control of the folding process and resource savings. It removes non-compliant packaging, therefore reducing waste, cost and time dedicated to control and compliance. “We are extremely proud that the FEFCO jury recognised the significance of this innovation and the huge benefits it will bring to customers,” said Yves Bletterie, area sales manager, BOBST Lyon. “It allows complete control of every single finished box without the slightest compromise on speed. These are very meaningful outcomes for our customers and for their own clients, and we are delighted to have been recognised in this way.” The system displays the statistics of the last jobs produced, letting the operator know how many boxes were ejected, if any, and why. This information enables the operator to optimise the machine’s settings.
