Fischertechnik wraps bio-based construction set in Paptic

veryone, including the toy industry, is looking for new and sustainable material alternatives to replace plastics in packaging. Step by step a shift from fossil-based to fiber-based materials is taking place, but in this specific industry, the goal is to neither compromise on safety nor functionality of the material. One sustainable material innovation will not work in all packaging applications, and so more new innovations are needed to reduce the use of plastics. Today’s consumers are also more demanding and expect responsible choices from brands in all fields. Changing a fossil-based packaging material to a sustainable one is a very visible and appreciated responsible action from a brand.


fischertechnik, a sustainability forerunner in the toy industry, chose Paptic for the pouches of its bio-based construction set ‘Animal Friends’. The pouches made of Paptic are packed in a cardboard box making recycling super-easy for consumers.


“We are delighted to offer our customers a sustainably complete package, from the product itself to the packaging,” says Jasmin Reich, product manager, fischertechnik.


Paptic is a new kind of material innovation that is geared towards both sustainability and


functionality. According to the company it is a safe, sustainable, and functional alternative to replace plastics in packaging. The soft but strong heat sealable material runs on existing converting lines. This enables an easy shift for brands from plastics to Paptic in various packaging applications. Testing of the materials’ suitability for packing different goods is made easy; no investments in converting lines are needed to adopt this fibre-based alternative.


Thanks to Paptic material’s strength properties, overall packaging material usage is said to be significantly reduced. The smooth appearance of Paptic material is recognisable and sustainable. The wood fibres used in production originate from sustainably managed Nordic forests and Paptic is available as FSC certified. “The importance of sustainability is continuously growing. At fischertechnik, we want to live up to our responsibility targets and secure nature for future generations. One concrete action is to look for more sustainable packaging solutions for our products and applications,” summarises Ms Reich.

standards for packaging materials. “We see that there is an increasing interest in various industries to find a sustainable substitute for plastics in packaging. Product packaging is often the first physical point of contact with a brand for the consumer, and a brand’s sustainable packaging material choice is a visible sign of responsible action, which consumers value,” says Uwe Schulz, business development and sales at Paptic. “We are proud that fischertechnik chose Paptic and I want to thank Jasmin and her team for the smooth co-operation. From the beginning, it was clear that we shared a common interest in finding a sustainable solution to replace the plastics in the packaging of fischertechnik’s bio- based construction set. Our material combines sustainability and functionality, for example, in this case, the puncture resistance of the lightweight material was much appreciated. Paptic material has already been delivered to over 50 countries and is used in various packaging applications from carrier bags to e-commerce mailers and product packaging.
