Flexible Packaging
The 5 benefits of flexible packaging: Innovation by Berlin Packaging
B
erlin Packaging off ers a wide range of lightweight, strong and safe fl exible packaging solutions, ideal for reducing the use of raw materials and, at the same
time, effi cient logistics handling. They combine the elements of design and innovation, manufacturing services and logistics management in the packaging industry to support customers with fl exible, sustainable solutions in line with market trends. Designed to meet the needs of any sector, fl exible packaging brings fi ve fundamental advantages: 1. Lightweight: fl exible packaging is characterised by its low weight and a minimal carbon footprint, which make it highly transportable and practical in daily use. These features also allow it to optimise loading space and reduce total emissions for the same amount of goods transported.
2. Less packaging, more product: fl exible packaging is a widely used packaging type in the food sector, taking up over 40% of packages, excluding beverages, however its weight represents only 10% of the total weight of food packaging. In fact, for the same packaged food product, fl exible solutions are the lightest option. This allows customers to guarantee hygiene of packaged products, as well as guaranteeing consumers’ safety, and to off er technological properties required by the market, all with little raw material.
3. Shatterproof and safe: fl exible packaging guarantees safety in use and rules out the risk of cuts or injuries in the event of a fall. It allows practical and space-saving storage at home, as well as in a warehouse. Once the product is consumed, the package greatly reduces its volume, allowing effi cient disposal.
4. Foldable and portioned: a possibility of closing the package easily, thanks to special adhesive tabs, with a screw cap, with special zips or with a simple clip, allows consumers
to use the package until the end of the product consumption.
5. Suitable for all consumption needs: fl exible packaging is available in multiple formats that off er the consumer an opportunity to choose the one that best suits their needs.
Flexible packaging leads the way towards the development of sustainable solutions with reduced environmental impact thanks to its minimal use of materials and excellent properties in terms of barrier protection. To achieve this outstanding performance, conventional fl exible packaging has been made with layers of diff erent materials, but this poses a challenge for recycling. For recycling purposes, it is therefore best to use layers made by a single type of material, or mono-material. The developments and possibilities are moving very quickly. More and more manufacturers are replacing their multi-material laminates with mono-materials. Mono-material is available as fi lm in rolls and as pre-formed bags. Bags can have a spout and cap to make them resealable. A mono-material spouted pouch is a good alternative to rigid bottle packaging. Both fl exible and rigid packaging have their benefi ts, it really depends on what you are packaging and how it will be used, but from an environmental point of view, in most cases, fl exible packaging requires less energy to manufacture and transport, reduces product waste, and sends less material to landfi lls.
