converted corrugated case material papers’. The converted materials that Colombier UK can supply include sheets, coils (down to 50mm+ wide) and reels, available in bespoke core sizes and diameters to suit customer requirements, with the main grades available being recycled Fluting, Testliner and Dual Use, as well as White Top Testliner, Kraft and White Top Kraft. GSMs available range from 85gsm up to 300gsm+, depending on the material required.

The company also has the ability to source other materials on request.

Alongside its sheeting and coiling capabilities, Colombier UK are able to utilize their Mobile Reel Divider (MRD) and Mobile Reel Resizer (MRS) to further ensure a truly bespoke product for its customers.

“As the reels are not unwound, this gives the added benefi t of maintaining the guaranteed Mill tensions. The fi nishing process that is applied to

the edge can often result in a better quality fi nish than the original mill fi nish” Mr Langworthy added. Sheeting of packaging papers has seen a

signifi cant growth in volume this year. With a history of converting graphical papers for use in food tray liners, book and magazine publications, pharmaceutical and other food products, Colombier UK now convert recycled packaging papers for use in a variety of end use applications. “Reel to sheet conversion has always been a mainstay of Colombier UK, and our versatile conversion machinery is now capable of providing a just in time, high quality product on all packaging grade substrates the same as it always has with graphical papers” Mr Langworthy commented.

TRADING

As well as purchasing stock in from the Mills to be converted down, often Colombier UK have

the opportunity to distribute clearance stocks for export if they are surplus to requirements to the UK market. “We’re always keen to expand our partner base in this area and work with traders based overseas that may be interested in purchasing stock lots in bulk volumes” stated trading sales sxecutive David Wiggins. “Often the stocks are collected directly from the suppliers and shipped overseas, but we do have the option of loading/unloading containers at our Sittingbourne site if required” he added. A closer look into the Envelope Market

Building Colombier UK’s customer base in the envelope market has been a particular focus this year using its brown recycled packaging papers. Ryan Langworthy, assistant managing director of Colombier UK, said it’s a perfect match for the business, as envelope manufacturers require specifi c sizes and quantities in a mix of both small reels and sheets. “Not many conversion facilities are geared up to off er a ‘one stop shop’ service to cover this range,” Mr Langworthy said. “Many of the brown envelopes that you see come through in the post are produced with Kraft paper produced from mills based abroad. In a market where we are looking to reduce the carbon footprint on the products we buy, it seems ridiculous that we do not close this cycle and keep everything within the UK wherever possible.” With the majority of Colombier UK’s source material originating from UK-based paper mills, it is looking to close this loop and reduce its customers’ costs at the same time.

Mr Langworthy said: “Obviously this comes with its own set of challenges;

some of the larger end users are hesitant to change to a new grade, but we are confi dent that our material is suitable for the larger scale end of the market. With only minor adjustments to the envelope machines, we have managed

to help one of our customers switch from a Kraft grade to a recycled grade, saving them money and getting positive feedback from their customers.” Although the brown envelope market has shown to be fairly stable this year, Colombier UK is working with its customers to explore options on bespoke products, such as off ering barrier coated papers to create a printable, sealable and water repellent material on which to produce envelopes or sachets.

“We are very excited about our barrier coated papers and their potential in the food service industry, and look forward to sharing more details on this in a later article,” Mr Langworthy added.
