n the ever-evolving world of packaging, adhesives play a pivotal role in ensuring product safety, sustainability and regulatory compliance. Market trends lean heavily towards environmental consciousness and stringent safety standards. Emphasis is driving a notable shift towards reducing environmental impact, specifi cally focusing on enhancing recyclability and compostability and transitioning from plastic to paper packaging. This article explores these trends, the innovations developed within this market to address them and the factors that signifi cantly infl uence handling and the end-use of laminated fl exible packaging. Each trend brings its own set of challenges. Within mono-material packaging, the primary challenge lies in maintaining the same level of food protection while using polymers that enhance sustainability. This transition is necessary to improve recyclability, but equally must not result in increased food waste due to reduced shelf life.
Similarly, compostable packaging requires adhesives that can perform eff ectively while also biodegrading under composting conditions. The emphasis is on home compostability rather than industrial compostability, requiring that all elements, including lamination adhesives, provide mechanical performance and biodegrade appropriately. At Sun Chemical, we approach these challenges by redesigning packaging to be more sustainable while keeping costs under control and ensuring compliance with global regulations. This dual focus on cost and compliance ensures that our innovations are not only environmentally friendly, but also economically viable and safe for consumers. Sun Chemical diff erentiates itself in the adhesive market through proprietary technologies, particularly the Ultra Low Monomer (ULM) technology. This technology is at the forefront of our product portfolio expansion, off ering solutions that improve safety and comply with newly introduced regulatory standards, as well as future planned implementations.
We off er a range of adhesives tailored for various applications, emphasising solvent free technology and VOC exempt solvents. This not only reduces CO2 emissions, but also enhances processability by consuming less energy, providing a valuable cost neutral alternative. Combining this approach with our ULM technology, in particular, is pivotal in meeting current and future regulatory requirements, ensuring that the adhesives are safe for both operators and consumers. Two fl agship products in our portfolio are the SunLam and Paslim adhesives. SunLam adhesives are designed for fl exible packaging applications, off ering high performance and sustainability. Paslim adhesives are combining the performance of Sunlam adhesives with gas barrier improvement properties, ensuring extended shelf life and improved food safety. Central to Sun Chemical’s innovation strategy is our SunEco portfolio, which includes sustainable inks, coatings and adhesives designed to enable eco-friendly packaging solutions.
