Coating & Laminating St-Luc enhances production

with new lamination equipment The Belgium company has acquired a water-based laminator Comexi L20000

to complement its film products printed on the HP 20000 digital press. St- Luc is a family grown business with 25 years of experience in the field of packaging. With more than 200 employees and a turnover of more than $40 million, the company prints and converts flexible packaging from its production sites in Belgium, The Netherlands and France. Comexi L20000 is the fruit of a strategic

delivery times, easy switch between lamination and coating, and to make it possible to deliver a complete packaging in less than 24 hours. Besides, the water-based machine minimises waste, an essential benefit when facing the growing trend of very short runs. This also leads to a saving in costs and reduction of environmental impact.

IMPROVING EFFICIENCY Niko Dhondt, managing director of St-Luc explains that they opted for L20000 after having looked through many options: “We saw many water-based laminators and, finally, we confirmed

that L20000 technology gave the best answer to our needs in short run flexible packaging in terms of set up-time, waste reduction, curing time and, moreover, we are still a solvent free company.” The user-friendly equipment developed by Comexi is suitable for fast job setups and changeovers that lead to major improvements in turnaround times, while simultaneously reducing waste and offering lead-times of one week, responding today’s market requirements. Furthermore, Dhondt assures: “The L20000 is a perfect match in order to serve the market of short runs flexible packaging. Now, we can deliver film products to our clients in less than one week thanks to its fast curing time, which is a clear benefit in combination with digital printing.” Besides its short delivery times, Comexi L20000 was designed to offer efficient time-to-market thanks to its energy efficiency and minimal noise pollution. This is Comexi’s first lamination machine for St-Luc that will enhance the performance of its latest production hall, which contains different printing, laminating and digital technologies for flexible packaging customers. On the other hand, the company has just acquired a Comexi S2 DT slitter and has other commercial agreements in mind. Comexi’s lamination brand manager, Carles

Rodríguez, highlights: “We paid close attention to the design of the L20000 in order to fulfil all the specific digital market needs. It’s delightful to see that we did a great job and our customers are succeeding and growing. This is the best recognition for Comexi.” In this sense, Carles Rodríguez assures that the automatic self-cleaning of Comexi L20000 it is one of its great features: “Saves such an amount of time, efforts and money that, in my opinion, makes it the top feature of this unique laminator and coating machine.”

Kroenert expands its portfolio with a coating unit for simultaneous double-sided siliconising

unit for simultaneously siliconising both sides of a web with solvent-free silicones. This coating unit can be included in new plants or retrofitted in existing facilities. Retrofits offer a special advantage in that the flotation dryer already installed in many plants can be used for the non-contact transport of webs and combined with a non-contact air turn in front of the dryer. This feature cuts down on costs for equipment and operations, and minimises environmental impact. The process of double- sided siliconising is especially suitable for paper webs used as release liners for adhesive tapes, for example, and for graphic products. The simultaneous coating of the front and back of paper webs substantially prevents paper from drying out and the coating machine

can be considerably shorter in length, taking up less space. Moreover, the system requires less operators, allowing one person to oversee two coatings at the same time. As only one dryer is needed, this process is very resource-eficient and consumes less energy. The siliconising unit can also be utilised for one-sided coating and operate flexibly with other substrates and silicones at any time. “Our new siliconising unit, which simultaneously coats both sides of a web using roll-to-roll technology, has proven successful in practice and is an outstanding addition to our portfolio of top-quality products, which to date includes systems primarily with gravure rollers for double-sided coating,” says Wolfram Szczepaniak, head of technology at Kroenert. “The expansion of our product lines of eficient coating solutions is an ongoing process and we are already testing the next developments in our Technology Centre.”
