Industry News Editor’s Note

Hello wonderful readers and welcome to the February issue of Converter magazine. I’m delighted to bring you a whole host of heavenly features this month including all the recent developments in Carton, Board & Paper, what’s new with Drying, Curing & UV, and

how the Reel & Roll Handling sector is growing from strength to strength. As ever, sustainability is at the forefront of my mind and I’m thrilled to see new and innovative ideas being tried, tested and put to market, and to see the positive response it’s gaining from both the industry and end user. There’s a real enthusiasm for change in the air this year that not even the uncertainties of Brexit can dampen. Spring has almost sprung, the first bulbs are peeping up through

the ground, and ICE Europe is on its way. The biggest show in our industry will be returning to Munich this March, and it promises to be bigger and better than ever before. I’d be delighted to meet up at the show for a chat over coffee, to discuss the latest and greatest products, processes and people that are shaking up the sector. So please do get in touch, drop me a line over email or give me a call. Here’s to a cracking start to the year, and fruitful months to come.

SIG release paper straw solution

SIG is one of the first in the industry to offer a market ready alternative to plastic straws and have announced that a paper straw solution will be delivered to first customers in the first quarter of 2019. With growing concern about the

environmental impact of plastic straws, the food and beverage industry urgently needs an alternative solution. SIG’s new paper straw offers such a solution.

Markus Boehm, chief market officer at SIG, said: “We saw an opportunity to address concerns about marine litter and offer added value to our customers by helping them meet consumer and regulatory demand to scrap plastic straws. This win-win is a great example of how our

commitment to go Way Beyond Good for the environment is delivering real business benefits.” Nestlé is the first customer to introduce SIG’s paper straw solution and

has already tested the market launch in the Dominican Republic. Michael Schwan, manufacturing manager RTD - Dairy Strategic Business Unit at Nestlé, said: “We are committed to improving the environmental performance of our packaging and addressing the critical issue of single- use plastics is an important part of that. We need effective, scalable solutions and SIG’s new paper straw has the potential to meet that need.”

Recycling program for discarded siliconised release liner saves tonnes

Because it contains silicone, paper release liner was regarded as unsuitable for recycling for a long time. But for many years now, it has been establishing itself as a sought-after raw material. Despite being mostly discarded as waste, this material is ideally suited for recycling, which is not only climate-friendly but also counteracts the continuing shortage of certain resources. For the eighth year in succession, self-adhesive materials expert

HERMA based in Filderstadt has equalised the CO2 emissions of its entire 78 vehicle fleet by collecting release liner for recycling. According to Cycle4Green’s (C4G) certification, HERMA has collected approximately 201 metric tons of discarded release liner from self-adhesive materials production for a special recycling process in 2018. With the help of Cycle4Green and the Austrian paper manufacturer Lenzing, this was again turned into label paper or release liner, both of which are reused by HERMA, amongst other things. Manufacturing the same amount of product from virgin fibre would have increased CO2 emissions by 406 metric tons. By comparison, the family company's fleet only generated CO2 emissions of just under 400 metric tons. By participating in this recycling program, we not only make an

important contribution to preserving the environment. We also somewhat counteract continuing resource shortages. Due to extreme demand in Asia, especially China, and continuing growth in Europe, we are facing continued resource shortages just like last year, for instance regarding paper”, explains Dr Thomas Baumgärtner, HERMA managing director and head of the Self-adhesive Materials Division.. Since 2010, the self-adhesive materials specialist has been supplying

discarded release liner from production to the specialist recycling company Cycle4Green
