Drying, Curing & UV

IST ‘encouraged’ by findings on LED-UV C

hris Schofield, joint managing director of IST (UK) and a speaker and exhibitor at

the events in Edinburgh and Sutton Coldfield says, “The British Coatings Federation Forum on LED-UV was extraordinarily encouraging. Developments in equipment and consumables, not least inks, are rapid and there is a consensus that we are on the brink of this technology becoming commonplace.” “It is clear that users have found genuine stand out advantages from the dry sheets and sharper quality that have allowed them to offer an added value product to their customers. Everyone knows that the inks are currently three or four times the cost of conventional inks (although you must factor in up to 30 per cent less ink being required because there is no absorption) but there are savings in other areas. These include energy and spray powder, of course, but also coating/varnishing units, storage and press footprint space and time and material waste and work rejected for marking. We have seen a groundswell in interest in LED- UV with enquiries from those wanting to understand the technology better through to those with a genuine interest in implementing the move.” IST (UK) offers LED-UV for sheetfed,

narrow web and digital applications and supplies both OEMs and direct to printer retrofits. At least two printers in the Midlands audience were looking at the retrofit option. IST’s programme offers an effective solution with minimal disruption to production and at a cost-effective price. Only recently it launched a retrofit concept

for rotary and flexo presses called LEDcure SCR. It provides a fully configured LEDcure package including cables, power supply, control and chiller, full light shielding and

interlocking for totally safety compliance. LED-UV adoption in Europe is behind the US and the UK is slower than many of its Continental neighbours in embracing the technology. This will change with all main press suppliers now offering the LED option and roller, plate and ink suppliers providing products that meet the needs of commercial and packaging print producers. “After 40 years in the curing market, IST is

well placed to see the trends. We have a strong base of UV systems and in recent years have supplied a number of LE-UV systems but the future is LED-UV because it is compact, sustainable and efficient, and those who have adopted it recognise its

effectiveness. It allows printers to operate with confidence and minimal risk of marking which allows them to run presses to their full potential. Its targeted and on-off operation makes it ideal for printers handling shorter runs,” says Schofield. For those in sheetfed or narrow web who

want to bridge the gap between going fully LED-UV with its LEDcure product, there is the hybrid product HotSwap which allows users to use interchangeable cartridges with common housing and electrics to switch quickly and easily between conventional UV lamps and LEDs. IST (UK) and its sister company ITL offer LED-UV for digital applications. ist-uv.com
