Slitting & Rewinding

The evolution of rewinding Comexi has evolved its S1 DS machine series with the addition of the heavy duty model (S1 DS HD). This new machine improves Comexi’s range of solutions in terms of performance, efficiency, and productivity. Business unit director Raul El Fakdi explains.

he upward trend in the stand-up pouch market, the increase of paper use to improve packaging sustainability, and the rise of packaging based on monomaterial polyethylene, are clear indicators of the future need to increase the diameters of output reels and, consequently, prioritize the overall speed versus the speed of change.

T

This slitter, the Comexi S1 DS HD, designed for the packaging market, has a standard configuration of two rewind shafts. Furthermore, as a result of a special feature, it can obtain a final rewinder output diameter of up to 1000mm and 500kg of maximum weight per shaft. The Comexi S1 DS HD has a minimum slitting width of 40mm, and depending on the material, the machine is able to slit a width as low as 20mm. The possible useful rewinder material widths range from 1450mm to 2150mm

The Comexi S1 DS HD is designed for a variety of packaging sectors, including: O Cups (cardboard) O Lids (aluminium and laminations with aluminium)

O Self-adhesive labels (paper with silicone and adhesive)

O Lithium-Ion battery manufacturing O APET, tobacco, and automotive coatings among many others.

All of the aforementioned sectors require

input reels with a minimum diameter of 800 or 1000mm. For this reason, Comexi Group has developed the concept of the S1 DS HD. Moreover, this machine offers complete versability, and is operable with a variety of elastic materials, such as: PE and MDOPE, PS, PA, PVC, etc. The Comexi S1 DS HD shares the centre-to- surface rewinding system of the S1 DS at 1.000 meters per minute and provides superior quality, as the rewinding point never changes. With the use of this technique, neither the rewind diameter nor the rewind point compromise quality. A higher rewinding quality is achieved due to: O The continuous guarantee of maintaining the same distance between the slitting and rewinding points

O The maintenance of material stability O The absence of reel flexing results, on account of the rewinder support against the rewinder lay-on roller

O The tension separation between slitting and rewinding.

With the objective of surpassing the existing high productivity levels of current slitters, and in line with Comexi’s values of seeking quality excellence, we have designed and incorporated ALWS (Advanced Linear Winding System) into the S1 DS. The integration of this system is significant due to its innovative characteristics. The ALWS operation is similar to that of a hybrid

between centre-surface and central rewind, thus maintaining the advantages of the former, while adding features of the latter, which include: O A stable rewind point, regardless of the rewind diameter, thus consistently guaranteeing the same distance between cut and rewind point.

O Constant support of the rewinder against the hold-down, with horizontal movement and within the same reel quadrant, rendering the pressure and back pressure influential, and in turn improving the quality of the centre- surface system.

O Increasing the final rewind diameter up to 1.000mm and to a maximum speed of 1.000mts/min.

O Providing versatility and profitability O Being user-friendly and ergonomic O Offering rapid changeovers with the possibility of incorporating various systems such as an automatic cross-cut system, an auto-taping to close coils, and an automatic core positioning.

The heavy duty version of the Comexi S1 DS, the S1 DS HD, which has the advanced linear winding system, not only unites the benefits of the various rewinding systems, but also readily allows the flexible packaging industry to make use of these advantages.
