Labelling

The offset (r)evolution C

omexi offers a wide range of packaging equipment, technologies and services for the flexible packaging and labelling market. The company’s strategic vision responds to market demands by developing more environmentally sustainable solutions.

With reference to sustainability and efficiency, the Comexi Offset CI is said to be the best label printing option. Furthermore, this technology allows printers to attract new customers and enter new markets. The Comexi Offset CI is a completely solvent-free hybrid printing press that combines offset and flexo with a central impression cylinder (CI), through the use of Electron Beam (EB) curing inks. It encompasses the advantages of offset printing as well as the safety of low migration EB inks and coatings (no photo-initiators), thus resulting in a wide range of substrates that can be used for numerous applications. Comexi Offset CI offers the best quality printing with competitive operating costs.

Last year, with numerous presses in operation for market leaders, five new machines were delivered worldwide (Brazil, Spain, Netherlands, Uzbekistan, and Thailand). Of special relevance are the three installations at Royal Sens, in the Netherlands, Jimenez Godoy, in Spain and Cosa Pack in Belgium. These companies are label printing leaders in their market, and this unit installation was the second for the Spanish company.

The new Comexi Offset CI Evolution model will be launched this year, 2022. In comparison to the previous model, improvements of this new model include more automation and user-friendly solutions to increase performance and efficiency.

This versatile machine offers printing advantages for shrink sleeves, wrap around labels, IMLs, self- adhesive labels, and flexible packaging. Why Sustainable? The key players are rapidly moving to a more sustainable and recyclable packaging; this creates the framework in to which the remaining contenders will follow. Market leaders have specific sustainability targets, which are measured according to the life-cycle assessment of the entire supply chain and final product use. Consequently, packaging design has the following significant impacts: O Packaging carbon footprint impact accounting for the impact of materials, energy, transportation, and recyclability or reusage

O Packaging content impacts, enlarging the product life or reducing waste.

Comexi Offset CI contributes to carbon footprint reduction by: O Reduced film thickness. Offset EB is a cold process. When combined with central impression, the machine is able to manipulate all forms of thin films at high speed with registered precision.

O Extended gamut. Offset EB printing offers an unparalleled solution in regard to maximizing the extended colour gamut process: high resolution as well as quality printing of solids, highlights, and fadings. As a result of automatic washing, this press, which is not limited to ECG, is able to easily manipulate direct colours as well.

O Operational efficiency. In regard to energy, the EB process can be reduced by 40% when compared to solvent inks that requires high air volumes and

temperatures for drying or the UV process that requires a large amount of electrical power for lamps.

O With reference to ink, the Offset EB is cost competitive and uses less ink to obtain a solid colour. EB curing inks do not dry and can remain in the machine for an extended period of time, thus reducing the changeover process and required numbers of cleaning.

O The Comexi Offset CI uses competitively priced recyclable lithographic aluminium plates (5-7€ each). The combination of this competitive edge and rapid prepress, which is similar to a digital process, offers the flexibility to easily change designs, logos, texts or colours. New designs can be introduced at a low cost. The Comexi Offset CI has a printing speed of 300mts/min and a web width of 1100mm. The machine is equipped with robotic sleeve changeovers and automated colour pre-setting, which has the option of colour measurement and a closed loop.

O Multiple SKU printing (grouping orders). The low cost of plates, high-quality printing, and ECG capabilities allows for frequent group designs and multiple SKU printing within the same run. This practice saves costs, time, and waste, while increasing productivity. To illustrate, a printing job that groups five designs together in a single print run becomes five times larger: the waste and changeover time are divided by five!!

O Recyclable ready packaging. The flexible packaging trend to replace complex structures with monofilm structures or monolayer solutions (full PE or PP) is extremely remarkable. With high efficiency, the Comexi Offset CI is able to manage thin elastic films, such as PE; EB curing can provide additional surface resistance to the final packaging.

O Surface Printing. EB coatings are highly resistant to chemicals, heat, sealing, and scratching, thus not only providing efficiency to the printing process, but facilitating recyclability. New innovations to improve recyclability through the process of de-inking are of special interest, as these improvements can transform printed surface of products into clean films.
