Welcome to the April issue of Converter. This month we see the start of the plastic packaging tax. It’s a tax aimed at encouraging change rather than raising revenue although I’m sure most won’t see it that way while struggling with the rapidly escalating costs of running a business and the subsequent cost of living.


On the other hand, the damage that plastic is doing to our environment is of an almost incomprehensible scale, and ‘encouragement’ does seem to work as evidenced by the supermarket plastic bag strategy.


One thing that I am learning about the converting industry is that businesses are generally pretty much ‘on it’ in terms of keeping their companies ahead of legislation – something that other sectors could learn from.


This issue we take a look at cutting systems, digital printing, film & foil, labelling solutions, software & controls, web tension and guiding – which I hope you find informative and interesting.
