Labelling Solutions Pursuing lucrative ventures with
impactful labels Rob Brown, head of European business development, professional printing at OKI Europe, highlights how changes in the label printing market are paving a profitable path for print service providers.
oday the rise of online shopping means that packaging is often a consumers’ first physical touchpoint with a brand. And as competition grows among online businesses, the ability to standout is key. Often, the products that pop out against a sea of competitors are the ones with personalised or stand out labels that truly grab attention.
T
By 2030, packaging will account for almost two- thirds of the global print market, creating avenues for diversification and personalisation. And with a 1.6% increase in EU business registrations in the third quarter of 2021, print service providers (PSPs) have more opportunities than ever to produce labels for start-ups that are creating and selling their own products.
With the right printing technology in place, print service providers can develop versatile, professional labels to capture maximum impact and command the attention of new and existing consumers.
REMOVING BARRIERS TO SHORT RUN PRINT PRODUCTION
Typically, traditional label printers have put limits on profitability due to the limitations in producing specific minimum quantities. The time and cost of setting up smaller runs pushes up the price of production, and customers are put off paying higher prices or have concerns over excess label stock that is likely to be thrown away, creating unnecessary waste.
However, technology is now available to enable businesses to offer short run print production affordably and profitably, on demand, and in truly professional quality. Intuitive digital narrow-format devices, such as the OKI Pr01050 CMYK + white label printer, now make it easy for any quantity to be printed, from as little as just one. By eradicating the minimum order quantity, PSPs can meet all customer requests and tap into new lucrative revenue streams, without passing on increased costs. And for urgent jobs with little turnaround time, PSPs can get a new job set up within minutes and print the exact volume of additional labels needed. GRABBING ATTENTION WITH STANDOUT LABELS
In addition to flexibility, lowered costs and turnaround time, many customers base their buying decision on the finish of the label provided. So, it’s critical that print service providers choose a label printer with good colour capabilities, plus the versatility of the device to print on different label media types and meet the creative needs of their customers. This could be label stock, textured, uncoated paper, PE, PET and PP synthetics, or even robust waterproof versions.
The OKI Pro1050 Label printer, offers OKI’s innovative CMYK + White colour technology to enable five colour printing and create a distinctive and eye-catching finish to label designs on transparent media. CMYK + White five colour printing
adds white toner under the CMYK design, making the label design stand out against the transparent background.
Urlichs & Pape, a German print service provider, needed to pivot its business due to a decline in demand for traditional label printing processes and an increase for coloured adhesive labels. By investing in OKI’s Pro1050 CMYK + white label printer, the provider is now able to produce labels on uncoated, glossy and textured papers, as well as synthetic materials and transparent, opaque, white or coloured substrates.
In addition, choosing a label printer with integrated LED printing technology ensures that a higher resolution and output quality can be achieved, even with fine lines and 2pt characters. In comparison to traditional inkjet label printers, LED devices are also much more reliable due to the absence of any heads that could become blocked with dried ink, while they’re also made up of fewer moving parts.
ACCESSING A REFRESHED REVENUE STREAM
For many PSPs, diversification is a necessity in today’s digital world. Providers need to explore new ways to replace lost print volumes caused by reduced demand and changing requirements. This means looking for new opportunities outside of traditional services, as well as ways to enhance existing services in response to customer demand, such as label printing.
Technology means that profitability should no longer be a concern when it comes to label printing. Revenue and profit traditionally turned away because the job is ‘too small’ is now a thing of the past and Print service providers need to move fast to capitalise on the opportunity. By using an LED powered tabletop, toner-based label printer, such as the OKI Pro1050 CMYK + White, PSPs can easily extend their in-house colour printing capabilities from the unexpected to the extraordinary, and gain access to new and lucrative revenue streams.
