Why water remains the healthiest on-the-go drink for school kids


W


hat drinks kids consume in schools is as important as the food they eat, according to a premium water brand. Matthew Orme, director at Wenlock Spring, believes water should always be the go-to drink for every child and should be a prominent part of the packaged beverages on offer. It comes as recent data revealed 31 to


41 per cent of five-year-old children across the UK have evidence of tooth decay, while more than one in five children in the UK are also overweight or obese when they begin school, according to the Natural Source Waters Association (NSWA). Matthew said it’s easy to forget about the


importance of water for overall health and a well-balanced diet.


“It’s no secret that tempting and tasty beverages are everywhere,


but water remains essential for life and should be the default drink for every child,” he said. Health studies have found properly hydrated children have faster


reaction times and are better able to multitask, and that a slight dip in hydration can hinder memory, shrink attention spans, and limit cognitive capabilities. “Staying hydrated helps kids stay alert and focused, can keep their bodies at a safe and healthy temperature, and may improve cognitive functioning,” Matthew said. “One of the easiest ways of ensuring kids drink more water is to


make it more accessible throughout the day.” Wenlock Spring is a member of the NSWA, which believes

establishing healthy hydration habits early is important for the health and well-being of young children and as they grow through life. “Over the last few years, a lot of effort has been made in helping to bring about a food revolution in schools, and making sure children have access to healthier food,” Matthew said. “The same consideration and attention to detail needs to be made when it comes to what they are drinking, and water remains the healthiest option.” Wenlock Spring exhibited at an annual event hosted by LACA, the food school people, at the Hilton Birmingham Metropole from July 3-4. The Shropshire-based firm shared how it can support the UK’s network of education caterers with its range of naturally sourced British spring water, alongside promoting its ‘Kids Run on Water - The Healthiest Drink on the Shelf’ message. Matthew added: “Water should be accessible at all times and


bottled water is the most convenient way to ensure this. “Whatever range of drinks wholesalers are offering to schools,


pubs, hotels or cafes, spring water should be a part of any packaged beverage portfolio, and I would love to see more shelf space given to it,” he added. Wenlock Spring is a second generation family business based
