service and repair

As appliances become more intelligent, additional benefits, such as identifying a required component ahead of an engineer visit, are improving the end service for a consumer

Dictionary word of the year for 2018 was “single-use” which shows how much our throwaway society has weighed on the collective conscience of the nation over the past 12 months. With millions of tons of electronic waste being dumped every year, we cannot conceivably go on as we are for much longer.

The challenge for us

and fellow businesses in our industry is to drive home the economic and environmental benefit of repairs

Our planet benefits from a thriving service

and repairs sector because fewer appliances scrapped means fewer toxins are released into the environment and fewer resources are depleted. It’s our duty as part of the sector to encourage a repairs attitude and prolong the lifespan of household appliances. For manufacturers too, it will make greater economic sense to keep appliances working for longer. The costs of raw materials are rising. Governments are introducing more and more legislation that leaves companies with no choice but to reuse and recycle.

December 2018 / January 2019 The rise of smart appliances will also be

a factor affecting the repair of appliances in the years to come. Internet-enabled devices will have the power to identify faults and alert the appliance owner making it easier to sort a repair. This functionality will be helpful to engineers too. It will save them time on diagnosis and mean they can avoid multiple call outs by bringing the right replacement parts to a job first time. It is often fear of the unknown that

prevents appliance owners from going down the repair route. A smart appliance displaying the exact cause of a fault removes this unknown and has the potential to make the process of quoting, booking repairs and acquiring parts much simpler. Manufacturers can also benefit from smart appliance data to identify common faults and improve the efficiency and longevity of their products. The repairs industry is so important. It’s

exciting to have seen it evolve over the past 50 years and it’s exciting to see how it could change in the future too. One thing is for certain, appliance engineers and shop owners selling parts and accessories to prolong the life of home appliances are doing a great thing. Enabling everyday consumers to get their faulty machines fixed improves their lives by helping them out of a stressful situation and quickly returning their home and routines to normality.

Appliance repairs can make greater economic sense than purchasing a new machine, while also reducing waste
