Industry associations support apprenticeships during pandemic
A
pprentices made redundant by the fallout from COVID-19 are
being offered a lifeline by SECTT, an industry-focused charitable trust backed by one of Scotland’s largest trade associations. SECTT, which manages high-quality training on behalf of the Scottish Joint Industry Board (SJIB), is actively seeking alternative employment for apprentices whose posts have disappeared, and has placed many out “on loan” to companies to keep their training and skill sets up to speed. It is hoped these employers will now
offer the apprentices employment and the opportunity to complete their apprenticeship, with 50% of the young people temporarily placed with other companies now being offered full-time jobs.
Engineering services trade association ECA,
meanwhile, has launched a similar apprentice secondment service to extend its ‘loan labour scheme’, to allow employers to both loan out apprentices and hire them on a temporary secondment basis.

ECA director of Employment and Skills Andrew
Eldred commented: “In these challenging times, some engineering services businesses are facing periods of time when they may struggle to find work for all their apprentices. Other firms are still busy, and are ready and able to help. Given the critical importance of apprentices to the future of the industry, our new apprentice support service will help ensure that temporary opportunities can be found to keep them learning and in employment.”
GWE makes strategic hires for 2020 growth
K charity the Gas Safety Trust has launched its 2020 funding call for research into carbon
monoxide (CO) poisoning. Applications are invited from researchers and academics related to prevention and better understanding of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning. Since 2013 GST has awarded almost £3 million to a range of gas safety programmes and projects. The Trust, set up in 2005, is the UK’s principal CO
research charity and has in recent years refocused its strategy on funding several strands of CO related research, to provide the underpinning empirical evidence that supports improved awareness and understanding of the effects of CO. Chris Bielby, GST Chair ,said: “GST has been pleased
to have been able to support a number of important projects relating to gas safety and CO. We will continue to fund research looking at both lethal and sub-lethal CO exposure and ways to improve CO data collection and analysis, as we know that strong data will help successfully influence behaviour surrounding CO.” The Trust looks forward to receiving applications by Friday 16 October 2020.
