New £1m training centre to boost electrical and low-carbon skills

L

eading apprenticeship provider JTL has offi cially opened its ‘Thames Valley’ training centre, following a major £1 million investment to expand high-quality electrical training across the region. The fl agship centre was formally opened by Baroness Jacqui Smith, Minister for Skills, who visited the site to meet with apprentices, local employers and industry partners, and to see fi rst-hand how JTL is supporting the next generation of skilled tradespeople. The new Thames Valley centre has been completely transformed into a modern, industry-standard training facility, with a dedicated electrical workshop, End Point Assessment preparation space, multiple classrooms and breakout areas. The centre has capacity to train approximately 200 apprentices each year, supporting the development of the skilled electrical workforce needed to meet growing demand across housing, infrastructure and clean energy.

Alongside the training centre, JTL has opened a new eight-bay AM2 Assessment Centre.

Research highlights homeowner electrical safety knowledge gap

N

ICEIC has released new research raising awareness of the importance of electrical installation condition reports (EICRs) among homeowners. The fi ndings highlight a signifi cant gap in understanding of electrical safety, underlining the need for continued, industry-wide eff orts to improve awareness and encourage regular inspection and testing. A poll of 2,000 UK homeowners, carried out by OnePoll, found one in seven have ignored potentially dangerous electrical faults such as constant tripping, broken switches and fl ickering lights. The research also points to low levels of engagement with electrical checks (EICRs). 22% have not had their electrics inspected and tested in over a decade, if at all, while 16% are unsure whether their property has ever been assessed by a qualifi ed electrician. Crucially, the fi ndings highlight widespread low awareness of EICRs. 69% of homeowners do not know what an EICR is, and 48% of those who are aware do not realise inspections are recommended at least every 10 years in owner-occupied homes.

For the industry, the fi ndings reinforce the importance of ongoing eff orts to raise awareness of electrical safety and the role regular inspection plays in maintaining safe installations.
