Electric resistance heating – a ‘Cinderella’ industry

020 will be remembered for reasons which none of us expected, with Coronavirus having a devastating

impact on lives, livelihoods and economies throughout the world, and engendering an extensive period of uncertainty about almost every aspect of life. Thankfully, as the world begins to recover from the shock and after- effects of this deadly virus, we are beginning to get back control of our lives and businesses. During this period of uncertainty, however, the

UK Government has still had to contend with the issues of the day, from Brexit negotiations to the implications of our Net Zero commitment by 2050. Last November, the Government published its 10-point plan for a Green Industrial revolution: an

ambitious series of initiatives to support Net Zero, create jobs and repair the economic damage wrought by Covid with a green recovery. A key component for our industry in this plan was the Green Buildings Initiative, which called for action to make our buildings more energy efficient and less reliant on fossil-fuelled boilers for heating. For many, the emphasis placed on these two

objectives was nothing new, as we have been aware for some time that heating accounts for 37% of total UK carbon emissions, with buildings responsible for over half of that figure at around 20%. To achieve our net zero emissions target, analysis by the CCC (Committee on Climate Change) suggests we need to de-carbonise all heat in buildings by 2050.
