Electrical Safety First update
A
manifesto to help reduce the number one cause of fires in Scottish homes has been launched ahead
of the Scottish Parliament election in May by leading consumer protection charity, Electrical Safety First. Electricity causes nearly three quarters of all house fires in
Scotland each year. In 2019 alone, it cost the Scottish economy an estimated £35 million. The Charity’s manifesto contains five key asks of the next Scottish Government and elected MSPs, to protect people and property from electrical risk. Central to these is a call for an integrated approach - a cross-government plan for electrical safety. In this way, intelligence can be shared and the evidence base improved, to ensure better targeting of resources, particularly for the most vulnerable.
Also this month, Electrical Safety First released a new
report on Northern Ireland’s homes which found private tenants had less protection from electrical risk than in other parts of the UK. It also suggests how annual savings of almost £9million could be made. Currently electricity is the primary cause of fires in Northern Ireland’s homes. In England and Scotland, five-yearly electrical safety checks in the PRS are legally required. Private landlords in Northern Ireland have no such requirement, leaving their tenants at greater risk of an electrical fire. Electrical Safety First’s Recharge report offers a series of recommendations to enhance electrical safety for all tenures.
