How they work


The survey also asked industry professionals about the tools and techniques they use. First, they were asked about their choice of programming language, and C++ still leads the fi eld (55%) and experienced some growth compared to C, the use of which has decreased to 34%. On the other hand, Python — the preferred language for artifi cial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) — and Java are both rising. Over 80% of survey participants are using AI or ML (or both), with a third saying that they are using these extensively.


There have been some changes in methods and processes used to develop quality software faster, especially automatic code generation, which is now used by almost 40%. In comparison, agile development experienced a dip to 42%, while waterfall bounced back to 19%. Agile’s decrease could be explained by more developers using automatic code generation or the increased requirements for functional safety, which encourage a more traditional development methodology.


As more software is added to vehicles, it is important to look at the operating system (OS) that development teams are using. The survey shows that the leading operating system is Automotive Grade Linux (31%), followed by Android Automotive OS (23%).


Regarding tools being used, over 40% use static code analysis, dynamic code analysis, application lifecycle management or project management tools. Around a third also use static application security testing (SAST), dynamic application security testing (DAST),


software composition analysis, version control, or automated/continuous testing. The use of these tools underlines a growing appreciation of and commitment to creating high-quality software that is proven to be safe and secure. In addition, about a third of respondents said that software development tools have helped accelerate time to market.


Across tools, techniques, and working practices, the survey results point towards a growing maturity of software development


within the automotive sector. And, while automotive industry professionals globally continue to face multiple challenges, it is clear that many are committed to equipping themselves to be in the best possible shape to adapt and thrive in the future.
