CML expands RF Building Block - 2.7GHz Up/Down Converter

CML Microcircuits expands its RF Building Block range with the new CMX975 - 2.7GHz Up/Down Converter.

CMX975 is an enabler for small form factor high frequency RF transceivers, operating at up to 2.7GHz, requiring high performance and low power consumption (2.7 to 3.6V). The device is programmable for an optimised system and integrates up and down conversion mixers and associated frequency generation circuitry, minimising external components required for a complete system.

Receive and transmit mixers operate in double balanced or image cancelling mode, easing external filtering and lowering system cost. Flexible switching allows internal or external oscillators and the main RF mixers to be driven from an external or integrated VCO. The Fractional-N PLL allows fine frequency resolution and fast frequency lock. An integrated integer-N PLL/VCO provides an IF local oscillator for superhet architecture.

Applications: mobile satellite services (MSS), military communications, aircraft surveillance, high performance ISM radio, RF/IF communication.

www.hbm.com BVM Limited offers portable thermal printers

It’s somewhat ironic that despite the ever-increasing connectivity and computing power of today’s phones, tablets, laptops, dedicated mobile data capture devices and portable terminals, the requirement for hard copy printed paper for receipts, quotations, job sheets, reports and certificates often causes the biggest problem for remote workers. However, there is now a huge choice of mobile printers; BVM Limited offers portable thermal printers with paper sizes from two inch wide rolls up to A4 sheets, which, supported by

software drivers and apps for virtually all computing devices and operating systems, enable high quality output to be produced irrespective of location or power availability.

Portable printers are typically powered by rechargeable Lithium Ion batteries, although in- vehicle printing from a fixed unit is also becoming an increasingly popular option for oil delivery drivers and others who need to leave professional looking printed documents with customers. Another increasingly important use for mobile hard copy information is in the Fire and Rescue Service, where plans of commercial buildings and large sites can be printed out while the vehicle is en route to the location of the fire.

There are 12 models in the TSP Series featuring regulated, adjustable single output voltages of 12, 24, 36 or 48VDC, with output currents up to 25A. Made by TracoPower, these DIN-rail power supplies are specified for industrial operating temperatures from –25°C to +70°C with convection cooling and over-temperature protection as standard. Other features include power good signal, over voltage protection and remote on/off. The TSP Series comes with a Worldwide safety approval package.

A range of complementary DIN-rail function modules increase the range of applications for these power supplies. A redundancy module provides true current sharing in parallel operation while a battery controller module allows the user to configure a highly reliable UPS system for 12, 24 and 48VDC. Here, Powersolve offers a wide variety of battery packs. Another module is designed to protect against short-time AC mains loss. This buffer module needs no battery and is maintenance free.

The TracoPower TSP Series units feature a rugged metal case construction designed to be shock and vibration proof. Installation is made easy thanks to detachable screw terminal blocks and snap-on DIN-rail mounting.

The TSP Series has worldwide safety approvals to EN60950-1 and UL508 and EMC Compliance to EN61204- 3 standards for industrial power applications. Some units can also be made available with ATEX certification for applications in hazardous locations.

www.powersolve.co.uk How do you choose the right magnet for your application?

We put this question to magnet expert Marc Teeuwen. He explains, 'Companies come to us with a problem concerning the integration of a magnet in a new or existing product. These magnets work together with sensors that guarantee flawless operation of countless devices.Consider, for example, the control unit for navigation and phone in cars or the control knobs for ovens and microwaves. And magnets are used at the high-tech level too, such as in linear drives for position determination at high speed.’

Magnet calculations

Marc says, ‘Exactly which magnet is suitable for a product and what the final power of that magnet will be, is difficult to determine. Goudsmit has experts on staff who can perform magnet calculations. When you have to do this yourself, it takes a lot of time before you finally find the suitable magnet. You search for a supplier, first request a sample, then test, adjust, reject and search again. Before you know it you are many months further along. Particularly when developing a new product you simply don't have this time. In the meantime your competitor will have caught up with you or production will have been at a standstill for months. This is every manufacturer's nightmare.’

Knowledge is power Marc continues, ‘Once we have a clear definition of the customer's problem and all the data are known, our people can get started, on the basis of a predetermined step-by-step plan. That is the power of detailed magnet calculations. We determine which magnet allows your sensor/drive/product to function as desired. Ultimately this must also be tested in practice, but by then you are already at 95% sure you have the right solution. That costs much less time and therefore money.

Moreover, we can also simulate and theoretically underpin the solution, thanks in part to the magnet measurements. And the quality controls we carry out also offer the assurance that you are buying a properly functioning product. Our commitment to quality demonstrated by the fact that we are a ISO/TS 16949 and AS9100c certified company.’
