Smaller, lighter, faster, easier-to-use: high-performance, modular connector solutions enable system excellence

Think about it: what electronic system doesn’t strive for at least one of the aforementioned attributes? Smaller enables portability, perhaps even wearability. Smaller can also mean more functionality and greater end-product differentiation. Lighter? Again portability, but also flight time, increased battery life. Increased speed usually means increased system performance but can also drive miniaturisation – think high switching speed power supplies. Which leaves 'easier-to-use'. You can read a manual, but if a system is intuitive, so much the better. While semiconductor development and software is often the driving force for such system improvements, without advances in the associated supporting componentry, then hard-won benefits can be quickly lost. Phil McDavitt, UK managing director Nicomatic Group tells us more

O

ne of the most obvious examples of this challenge lies with the interconnect systems chosen. This is further exacerbated in high-reliability applications. Take for example, defence where electronic equipment must endure and survive harsh-environments where extremes of shock, vibration and temperature are regularly experienced. Miniature connectors designed for consumer applications simply won’t be able to withstand the rugged conditions. Conversely, conventional heavy-duty connector systems will weigh so much that their use on drones or unmanned aircraft is too limiting in terms of flight time and/or available payload. When considering rocket or satellite applications, the challenges are even more severe with systems regularly exposed to high shock on take-off and wide temperature ranges whilst in space depending on their relative position with respect to the sun.

One company that has addressed the challenges of delivering advanced, high performance connector systems is

Nicomatic Group, headquartered in France across the border from Geneva, with 11 offices around the world including one in the UK near Reading. With over 40 years’ experience working with world-leading industrial aerospace and defence companies, the company maintains full in-house manufacturing and design in France resulting in high-quality products that are available on short delivery times. This is made possible not only by state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities but also an empowered workforce that is encouraged to contribute innovative ideas to processes and products. Also, Nicomatic is committed to modular manufacturing which means that any configuration of the company's high- reliability product range is immediately available. Therefore, unlike other companies that have a limited preferred- products list which limits design flexibility, Nicomatic can respond very quickly to a customer request with a product that is exactly what is required, rather than forcing the designer to accept what is on the shelf or to pay for a custom service.

temperature insulator allows infrared on vapour phase soldering (+260°C). Nicomatic also offers its DMM Series

Nicomatic believes in giving designers the freedom to express their creativity, unlocking their full potential. The company, of course, is certified to ISO 9001:2015 and EN9100:2016 for the aerospace and defence sectors. Nicomatic’s standard, high-reliability CMM interconnect system is a 2mm pitch connector range that is field- proven under the most severe vibration, shock and temperature environmental conditions. Devices withstand temperatures of up to 250°C for 1000 hours, exceeding the usual military specification by 85°C, as well as stringent humidity, salt spray, corrosion testing and high altitudes of up to 70,000 feet. This system has fulfilled the most rigorous requirements of MIL-DTL55302F qualification test routines and EIA test procedures. This is due to a high-reliability contact design, which features thicker gold plating than industry competitors. This board-to-board, board-to-wire and

wire-to-wire interconnect system benefits from the option of a mixed layout, giving the designer a choice of high frequency (up to 11 GHz), high power (up to 30 A), and low frequency (3A) contact configurations. The aforementioned modular design enables 50 million standard arrangements to be available on short lead times. Termination styles are available for

through board solder, surface mount and press fit. An integral stainless steel locking mechanism or spring latching system offers security of interconnection, whilst a high

Micro D connectors that are compatible with MIL-DTL-853513G requirements, but feature a wider choice of configurations than Micro-D or D-subminiature. DMM connectors also deliver substantial space- savings and improved electromagnetic and mechanical protection thanks to the use of single or two-piece backshells. Another product range is the DLMM series of lightweight, composite two-row, signal and mixed layout connectors. The latest product innovation from Nicomatic which significantly reduces space and responds once again to industry’s needs for miniaturization and increasingly complex systems is the launch this summer of a new micro connector, the EMM Series. With a 1.27 mm pitch, devices achieve extra weight and size reductions required by space-constricted applications in the most extreme environments. Designed to meet the performance requirements of MIL 83513, new EMM connectors incorporate features such as reversed contacts, integrated 90° back protection and interchangeable hardware. Suited to both board-to-board (thanks to its secure wiping length), and board-to- wire (from gauge 24 to 30) configurations, the modularity of the new EMM connectors means that any pin selection from 04 to 60 signal contacts is available. With the launch of its new EMM Series connectors and other upcoming products, Nicomatic combines a proven track record and continuous innovation targeting challenging, high-performance requirements in the defence, security, energy, civil avionics, and many other sectors.
