A new era in fibre optic transmission for defence and aerospace
ODU Connectors expands Beam Performance Portfolio to VITA Standards T
he limitations of current fibre- optic connectivity in the world of rugged embedded systems continue to be an issue for end users in defence and aerospace applications, says ODU Connectors. These limitations include low mating cycles and the need for excessive cleaning in the field. The new Expanded Beam Performance products from ODU are the answer to these limitations, the company adds. Very high mating cycles, low susceptibility to dust and excellent transmission values are said to be a game changer for the end user. Expanded Beam Performance connectors are available in both single-mode and multi- mode versions. Also, due to its small size, the ferrule can be integrated in both circular and backplane connectors.
At the heart of the new portfolio is a cassette system that allows multiple ferrules to be arranged side by side in a space-saving manner. With 12 connected fibres per ferrule, up to 96 optical fibres can be connected via one connector. The technology is available in classic I/O circular connectors and in backplane connection systems in accordance with VITA standards.
In addition to its impressive transmission values, it exceeds available ferrules on the market with its extreme durability. The scattering of the light by using expanded beam technology eliminates the high maintenance costs typical for physical contact solutions.

of up to 96 optical fibres depending on the configuration. The design is characterised by its robustness and has been the market standard in the military environment for some time. This solution is the low maintenance alternative to products according to VITA 87 and VITA 89.

This alternative to the standardised MIL- DTL-38999 Series ll connector, is designed to excel with its 3-in-1 plug locking options of push-pull, snatch or screw-lock onto a common bulkhead. Qualified on the basis of the 38999 test standards, but with an even smaller footprint, the ODU AMC Series T meets all requirements for use in extreme environments and scores points with its lower weight and smaller form factor. Bulkhead couplings are available in the familiar square flange design, but also as a jam nut version. The system enables a
secure connection for at least 5,000 mating cycles without the need for cleaning.
ODU BACKPLANE // VITA 96 Based on the upcoming VITA 96 standard, the ODU BACKPLANE line enables the direct connection from module to backplane. The ODU BACKPLANE versions of VITA 96.1, VITA 96.4, and VITA 96.5 fit into the same apertures as the existing VITA 66 versions, thus enabling easy integration of this Expanded Beam Performance technology. With a service life of at least 10,000 mating cycles, these connectors are suitable for applications where different modules have to be exchanged over a long period of equipment use.
