Front End | News Anglia continues to invest for growth in its 51st year A F

nglia Components plc has opened an expanded £2 million distribution and operations centre in Wisbech, in support of its plan to grow from £100 million to £150 million annual turnover and beyond. The opening ceremony was attended by Frank Wolinski, regional vice president of channel sales at STMicroelectronics, one of the world’s largest semiconductor manufacturers who Anglia has worked closely with for nearly 25 years. The major investment has allowed Anglia to expand into an adjoining building at its distribution and operations centre, increasing the floor area from 43,000 sq. ft. to 70,000 sq. ft. The new facility expands the overall inventory storage space by 40 per cent. Anglia has also recruited nearly 30 additional staff and has made major enhancements to

employee benefits across its entire business. These benefits include loyalty bonuses, a comprehensive health plan, company life insurance, additional flexible leave for important family events and the opportunity for flexible salary access. Anglia has also increased annual leave to 27 days (pro- rata for part time staff) and will close the business early at 1pm instead of 5pm on Fridays to give staff a longer weekend. Even though these measures reduce total working hours, all staff will remain on the same remuneration.

Anglia CEO Steve Rawlins said: “As we pass Anglia’s 50th anniversary milestone, I am delighted to announce our plans for continued investment in our people, infrastructure and inventory. These investments enable us to maintain our

Filtronic expands presence in satellite communications market

iltronic - the designer and manufacturer of products and sub- systems for the aerospace, defence, telecoms infrastructure, space, and critical communications markets - has announced a new contract win with a global provider of low earth orbit (LEO) satellite communications equipment. In recent years there has been considerable work undertaken to develop airborne communications networks that overcome the limitations of terrestrial networks. Challenges exist in designing these systems, one of which is the development of

communications transport links that deliver sufficient bandwidth and range to provide comprehensive connectivity.

The contract, valued in excess of £2 million, requires the customisation and delivery of the company’s solid state power amplifier (SSPA), Cerus. Originally developed for early High Altitude Pseudo-Satellites (HAPS) applications, the Cerus power module is based on Filtronic’s proprietary MMIC chip design and is provided in a small form factor module as a scalable SSPA. The Cerus module is available in 4, 8, 16 and 32- way configurations, offering power ranging

from 4W to >10W at E-band frequencies. The modules, and the related control boards will be installed in selected ground stations for commercial trials of the E-band earth station antenna links to and from the LEO satellite. This is the first time that high bandwidth E-band frequencies have been used in an operational LEO application.

Richard Gibbs, CEO at Filtronic, said: “E-band represents a viable licenced frequency band for the critical communication links to and from the orbiting satellite. Whilst terrestrial telecom companies have successfully used Filtronic E-band technology in their backhaul

links for many years, this new contract award vindicates our decision to adapt Filtronic’s proprietary mmWave products for the emerging commercial LEO satellite market.”
