D
atateam Business Media is pleased to announce that entries and nominations for the Electronics Industry Awards 2019 are now open. After the success of
the inaugural Electronics Industry Awards in 2018, the event has now been moved to London and will be held on Friday 21st June at the Tower Hotel. You can enter your outstanding company, product or employee for an Electronics Industry Award. You can also nominate another company(s) or individual(s) in each of the relevant categories. Entries and nominations are completely free of charge and can be submitted by filling out the online form making it quick and easy to shine a spotlight on those that deserve it. Subject to meeting the necessary criteria, each entry and nomination will then proceed to the decision- making stage.
Guided by the industry’s feedback from last year, some exciting changes have been implemented to the Electronics Industry Awards 2019. To give everyone more time to network with fellow colleagues and friends, the event has been moved into the summer and will offer a fantastic luncheon for all attendees. The dress code remains as lounge suits and cocktail dresses. The event has also introduced a panel of judges to its
decision-making process. Their scores will go hand-in-hand with the industry votes once entires and nominations have closed to ensure that the final winners in every category are the pinnacle of excellence within this vibrant industry, producing five finalists and ultimately one winner. Steve Chapman, marketing strategist and senior copywriter, Swordfish Marketing agrees that the industry vote is an important part of the process. He says: “We were impressed with the way the awards evening was staged. We’ve attended a few over the decades and this was among the best. The venue was ideal. The evening’s comedian host turned out to be a true asset and we enjoyed seeing him bamboozled by some of the industry’s preposterous product names. The catering was first class too – that was unexpected. Best of all is that the award votes came from the public. We like that as it gives credibility. In all, the evening was great fun and excellent value.” Nick Foot, PR director, BWW Communications also enjoyed the evening: “BWW and our clients really enjoyed the Electronics Industry Awards – a nice boost to our industry and a welcome addition to the calendar.” Mike Maynard, managing director, Napier agrees that the industry vote makes the Electronics Industry Awards unique. “As the only awards to be voted on by the
industry, the Electronics Industry Awards are highly prestigious,” he says. “The quality of attendees on the night – a who's who of electronics – reflected their importance.”
The event is organised by Datateam Business Media in association with CIE Magazine and supported by Electronics Magazine and ecsn.

The electronics of the future are smart, safe and secure M
ore than 3,100 exhibitors from over 50 countries provided an insight into the electronics of the
future with their solutions and products at the Munich trade fair site from November 13 to 16, 2018. The focal topics of this year’s electronica included blockchain, artificial intelligence and medical electronics. Falk Senger, managing director of Messe München, was highly satisfied about the record results after the four days: “electronica is the most important meeting place for the electronics industry and this year recorded eight per cent more exhibitors, ten per cent growth in the number of visitors and a more than 20 per cent increase in area. We are really pleased that exhibitors and visitors embrace the increasing relevance of electronica.” In view of the growing influence of artificial intelligence in everyday life, Kurt Sievers, president NXP & CEO NXP Semiconductors Germany, emphasised this
year’s slogan of electronica “Connecting everything – smart, safe & secure:” “First, artificial intelligence needs a functioning communications infrastructure. Second, consumers will only embrace artificial intelligence if they can approach it with a sense of security and trust.”
Facts and figures on the trade fair 80,000 trade visitors from over 80 countries came to Munich. Visitor satisfaction again reached a new all-time high, as the survey shows: 99 per cent of visitors gave the event a rating of good to excellent. In terms of the number of visitors, the top countries were Germany followed by Italy, Austria, Great Britain and Northern Ireland, France, Switzerland, the U.S., the Russian Federation, China and Poland in that order. The next electronica will take place in Munich from November 10-13, 2020.

Anglia warns of price instability as lead times shorten A
nglia Components is advising customers that lead times on chip resistors and passives are now
generally reducing – they are seeing 12-13 weeks now in some cases. However, the improved availability may lead to some price instability according to the distributor. Commenting on the reasons for this development, Steve Rawlins, CEO, Anglia Components, observed: “Weak iPhone demand and a softening of the Chinese economy in the face of sanctions are two

of the factors behind this. We believe we are in an inventory correction period as many customers have had to purchase in large quantities to secure components. I believe that this build-up of customer inventory could take till the end of Q1 next year to burn off.”
Steve Rawlins believes that although
improved availability is good news in some ways, there is likely to be price instability as this material is worked through. He said: “For our industry in general massive lead

time swings don’t do anyone favours in the long term as it becomes difficult to predict demand for both the distributor and the customer. We all want growth but in a measured way so everyone can plan material and at the end of the day deliver to the end customer on time.” Steve Rawlins concluded: “Anglia will use this opportunity to rebuild inventories that we’ve been using to keep customers supplied during the shortages. We are working closely with our customers to

understand their demand going forward, to make sure that we put in place the right stock profile and are able to keep supporting them whatever the market does in the longer term.”
