What the Retailers had to say about June/July 2022

Marie Sauka, Maries’ Shoes, Banet, North London: “Even though June and July were very hot this year, customers were very cautious about prices and were not as keen to spend on higher end footwear. I am thankful that business was still good but not as great as last year.

“We have some very tough times ahead as retailers, increases in Corporation tax now along with all the other hikes coming our way, the next few years are going to be very hard on us all and we will have to make every sale count.I have seen in this area many shoe stores close down over the last two years, the latest closing down due to a huge increase in rent and after 10 years cannot make it viable, which is so sad to see independents go. Let’s hope we can ride the storm and good trading to you all.”

Paul Lamb, Sims Footwear, Birmingham: “Decent sandal sales. Weather was in our favour and we had lots of visitors for the commonwealth games in Birmingham .... About the only time we felt a bit of joy on the high street this year.”
