Do you have an online shop/website and do you use social networking for business? The shop has a website whereby customers can browse through the shops products at their own leisure, you cannot purchase directly off our website however we do take all our online purchases over the telephone. It has a facebook, twitter and instagram account that are used regularly for anything from promotions to just simply pictures of the shops latest window display.


How are you finding the footwear market currently? The shop is busy all year round with the odd quiet day in February and November.


What’s selling well? Any particular trends? Which are your best selling footwear brands – and why? At the moment ankle boots are the shops best seller, along with slippers. Our best selling brands are Rieker, Gabor, Remonte, Tamaris and Caprice in the autumn and winter months. They are all prided on comfort and definitely deliver.


How do you select your products – which criteria do you use / what are your customers looking for? What nobody else sells locally. It has to pass the comfort test and all four family members have to agree. Customers look for something different that’s stylish but still comfortable.


Does your shop sell other items besides footwear, bags, gloves, tights, socks, below the ankle products? The shop sells different types of insoles, a good selection of shoe care products, including, shoe horns, protector sprays, creams and polishes.


Do you use an EPOS (retail technology) system in your shop? Yes we use EPOS. Only a few minor glitches every now and again, but nothing that cannot be easily fixed.


Any tips on stock offers, novel ideas for clearing lines or advice for independent shoe retailers who might be feeling the pinch? Stick to the same dates every year for the sales. Keep opening times the same so customers are aware of the times and don’t give up!

Which footwear/fashion shows do you attend, how do you rate them? The shows we tended to visit over the years have been MODA and the NEC but they are not as good as they used to be.


Do you have a favourite footwear agent you can tell us about? Our favourite footwear agent is probably Stephen Frost from Rieker.


Have you always had a passion for footwear? How many pairs of shoes do you own? Do you have a favourite pair? I own 20 pairs of shoes. Barker shoes are my favourite.


Any famous customers? Bobby Ball, Melanie Sykes, David Walliams, Ian Holloway, David Moyes, Jonas Armstrong, Roy Walker, Stu Francis, many Blackpool Football Club and Preston North End Football players too.


And, the next step? Any plans for the future, new lines, retail systems/new technology, etc.? Always on the look out for new and upcoming brands.
