FOOTWEAR FOCUS ROAD TEST

L

et’s face it, most of us have messed our feet about. We danced though the night, we squeezed our feet into impractical shoes because they were

fashionable, we tramped to and from work, we do exercise or go hiking in footwear that is not fit for purpose. Until, it is so worn out that the promised properties of protection and pronation are exhausted. While, we focus so much on skin care, working in moisturisers and slapping on the sun tan lotion; while we don’t neglect our hair, spending outrageous sums on shampoos, conditioners, lotions and potions, even hair transplants to keep signs of aging and balding at bay; while we try to keep trim with a proper diet and have regular check-ups at the doctor or the dentist… But, when do we give our feet a second thought? My feet went with me to Africa when I moved there as a child. No sooner had I disembarked from the ship and I dispensed with shoes altogether. Never mind the terrain, the rocky mountain side or the thorn-strewn path my feet were unprotected. While the soles of my feet were like buffalo hide they nevertheless took a bashing.

Dog eyes The problem with neglected and abused feet and, of course, the feet of people who become subject to the aches and pains that accompany the joys of aging, is that, having cared for every other part of your body, you find that there is a built-in disincentive to exercise, even so much as a gentle walk, when your feet start playing up. No matter how many times the dog looks at his lead on the back of the door and back to you, you really couldn’t be bothered because you know your feet are tired and might be painful. Man’s best friend is possibly the biggest fan of my Padders Terrain

waterproof shoes. Interestingly the company, based in Northamptonshire used to have a dog in its logo: today that is a dog’s paw print with a Union Jack reflecting the fact that Padders are made in the UK. I am the second biggest fan of the Padders Terrain shoes because of the comfort they have brought to my poor neglected feet. Padders stress their “feelgoodfeet” slogan in their advertising and the

Terrain shoes are made using soft leather with a cushioned insole and soft textile lining for warm, comfortable feel good feet.

The unique “Aqua-Paw” (geddit) membrane which allows feet to breathe while maintaining a waterproof barrier for those early morning dog walks when the dew is still on the grass but really at any time of day, come rain or shine.

“Dual Fit” An additional feature of the Padders shoes, including the Terrain, is that they are designed as a “Dual Fit” with two insoles allowing the removal of an insole to create a wider personalised fit, or to insert an orthotic. And, Padders go a step further with their “Padotics”. These are four types of non-prescribed orthotic-type inserts that offer additional support to the foot which can help to improve posture and comfort. The four supports could be said to compensate for the wear and tear to

which we subject our feet, or simply the non-medical support that can greatly improve the incentive to take the dog for a ramble. One offers a neutral heel with arch support; the second neutral heel with arch and metatarsal support; the third posted heel and metatarsal support and the fourth posted heel with arch support. So, whatever inflection your feet have developed, it is likely that there is a Padotic to give you the support your feet require.
