FROM THE EDITOR Showtime!
I
t’s August and Showtime again! I hope the sun will still be shining where you are by the time you read this Comment, as I’m writing in July from a blisteringly hot
Kent, where the sun has been shining almost continuously since May! The weather was a popular topic among footwear retailers who responded to
Best Sellers this month, including this one from a retailer in sunny East Devon: “After a rain battered start to the summer May saw sales go into overdrive. With the tills ringing and stock flying out of the door it was no surprise to have our best month ever, exceeding last year’s record figures. Bring on the Sun.” Although the summer sunshine has helped many footwear retailers in the UK
and Ireland, some other retailers, particularly those selling children’s footwear, have reported that rising sandal prices are putting off customers and their sales are down. Fingers crossed for a good Back to School, these retailers need it! If you're looking for some new children's footwear brands, why not shop around? Plan a visit to the Gatwick Show at the Holiday Inn Gatwick 9-10th September, it's showing the best of kid's shoes in a convenient location. I’ll be attending Moda this month to bring you the latest trends for SS19. Do check out our Moda Preview on page 4 of our Moda supplement. I’m also looking forward to meeting up with members of the Footwear Today Best Sellers Panel and many old friends from the footwear industry so do let me know if you are attending? Whilst, gleaning insight into what’s likely to be flying off your shelves next
summer, you might care to check out our Editor’s Choice pages 21-25. We have selected some superb sandals and sling backs from Europe’s top manufacturers and those from further afield, for your lady customers in SS19. Don’t miss our popular Best Sellers and Retailer of the Month pages. Independent footwear retailers who would like their shop profiled in Footwear Today Magazine, might be interested joining our Best Sellers Panel? If so, I would be delighted to hear from you and tell you how you can participate and claim your free profile, a double page spread dedicated to your shop(s), my contact details are shown below. This season The London Shoe Show will be held on the 23rd to 24th September
2018 at the Copthorn Tara Hotel, in London Kensington. I recommend retailers find the time to visit this worthwhile Show. You can read my Preview of the show on page 3 of this issue. Do come along and meet the Footwear Today team at Moda, NEC Birmingham, from August 5th to 7th. Look out for Stand No F61.
Kind regards, Cheryl
