gasses
s mankind continues to develop accelerated industrial processes, all eyes turn to the harmful gasses emitted by these processes and our products, now felt more acutely than ever with the obvious signs of the climate changing. Businesses - large and small - scratch their heads where to turn to for an easy, quick and cheap way to reduce and/or capture one of the worst offenders - CO2. The scientific and engineering communities are on the case, creating solutions, not all of which are met with enthusiasm, since some solutions are not so environmentally-friendly themselves. Luckily, nature may already have a solution for us, and it’s embedded in the Hajar mountains of Oman, on the Arabic Peninsula. These mountains are home to the largest concentration of ophiolite - a section of the Earth’s oceanic crust and part of the underlying upper mantle that has been thrust above sea level, becoming part of the earth’s surface.

Ophialite reacts with the magnesium in the rock and CO2 from the air, to create a thin film of magnesite, which is magnesium carbonate, which permanently traps CO2 in the form of a thin, crusty film over the water’s surface. This is a naturally- occurring process that has likely been going on since the planet first came into being. But, now, with the problems humans have brought to the planet, industries are turning to this solution to capture CO2 on a large scale. There are plans to accelerate CO2 capture, with hopes that by 2040 a billion tonnes of carbon a year could be turned into harmless crystal rock - that’s equal to the annual CO2 emissions of the UK and Germany combined. And the solution lies in the geology of Oman! We may be fortunate with this, as nature might have the answer on this occasion: Oman could potentially hold the future of our planet in its unique rock formations. But, surely, we should think about the impact our processes and emissions bring to this fragile planet when designing our products, rather than wait to find a solution after the damage is done. One for the drawing board!
