CONFIRMING COMPLIANCE: The new BSI Kitemark testing for cables

In an ideal world compliance is easy and quality is a given. Unsurprisingly, we don’t live in that world and like most products, when it comes to cables vigilance is still required to make sure that what you buy will perform to the specification you anticipate

themselves bound by British and European standards. For example, conductor resistance needs to meet the requirements of BS EN 60228. For the Kitemark to be applied, each batch of cables (in that core configuration and cross-sectional area size) must be examined and tested. BSI Kitemark approval gives demonstrable evidence that cables meet these underlying standards, as well as the overall cable standard where applicable.

escribed by BSI as “the new benchmark in cable compliance” the

BSI Kitemark for Cable Batch Verification is a new programme regulated and under the rigorous surveillance of the British Standards Institute. It has been achieved by one company only to date, Eland Cables, and it sees cables extensively tested against British, European and international standards in their UKAS- accredited laboratory. The BSI Kitemark has long stood for

quality and trust. An independent third- party mark, it can be seen on products as diverse as car windscreens and smoke detectors. Certainly, in the UK the Kitemark is recognised by over 82% of adults, and with the launch of a Kitemark programme that covers cables, this valuable gauge of quality is now applied to one of the most ubiquitous of products.

APPLYING THE KITEMARK Cables are everywhere and form part of the infrastructure that powers our everyday lives. We are frequently reminded of the risks and impact of non- compliance, with the worst case being short-circuit leading to fire. Compliance in relation to this Kitemark is determined by testing the individual components - the conductor, the insulation and other constructional layers – elements that are

A NEW RANGE OF KITEMARK TESTED CABLES – VERIFLEX To mark the launch of the Kitemark, Eland Cables are launching their own range of industrial automation cables, called Veriflex, which includes SY, CY, YY, Servo, PUR and fieldbus cables. With BSI Kitemark testing it allows the company to verify the quality, safety and performance of these cables against relevant British and European standards. It means not only are they available for next-day delivery from their UK stockholding, but they are offered with an extended warranty as standard. For Eland Cables, it’s about continuing their drive to provide consistency and continuity and putting compliance at the top of the agenda in every conversation.

THE VALUE OF THIRD-PARTY MARKS Cable buyers around the world look for third-party accreditations from recognised and trusted organisations. Yet not all manufacturers submit their cables for this

additional level of oversight and not all cables can be tested under these approval programmes. The addition of the BSI Cable Batch Verification Kitemark means it can be a voice of authority on cables that are tested under the BSI regime.

FINAL WORDS FROM BSI Paul Turner, certification technical expert at BSI, says: “As the first company to achieve the BSI Cable Batch Verification Kitemark, Eland Cables sets a new benchmark in cable compliance. “The rigorous and extensive testing programme they undertake in their UKAS laboratory, under our ongoing surveillance, tests the cables to British and international standards for key safety criteria. The BSI Kitemark is one of the most recognised symbols of quality and safety and by certifying their cables against the scheme, Eland Cables can demonstrate that its cables meet the highest standards.”
