FEATURE MACHINE VISION SYSTEMS UKIVA event is a great success

The UKIVA Machine Vision Conference and Exhibition is a showcase for the latest vision technologies and services from the leading companies from the world of industrial vision and imaging. Visitor numbers to this year’s event, which took place at Arena MK, Milton Keynes in May, were up by 17 per cent compared to 2017. It featured 54 technical seminars and two keynote presentations, supported by an exhibition from 56 of the world’s leading suppliers of industrial vision components systems and services

behaviours and attitudes to driverless cars and the insurance and legislative perspectives that must be developed in order to facilitate successful deployment on the roads. Henry Harris-Burland discussed the challenges faced by his company in bringing personal delivery robots to market, including the attitude of the public to these vehicles.

P

resenters and exhibitors were impressed by the number of visitors to this year’s UKIVA

Machine Vision Conference and Exhibition who not only showed a solid appreciation of vision technology, but were also seeking vision solutions for real applications, making this a real platform for business.

DEEP LEARNING AND EMBEDDED VISION SHINE The Deep Learning and Embedded Vision seminar theatre attracted the largest audiences across the day, although there was also plenty of interest in the other seminar topics. The seminars on Deep Learning and Machine Learning proved to be the most popular with ‘standing room only’ at some. This was the perfect opportunity for attendees to learn more about this hot topic in the industry, and also to see practical examples at some of the exhibition stands, as these capabilities are becoming available in commercial vision products. One of the key messages was that deep and machine learning can make massive improvements in object feature detection and classification, but are not suitable for every application, so careful choices need to be made.

KEYNOTES HIGHLIGHT DRIVERLESS VEHICLES The two keynote lectures, presented by Professor Tony Pipe, deputy director at Bristol Robotics Laboratory, UWE and Henry Harris-Burland, VP marketing at Starship Technologies, looked at two very different aspects of autonomous vehicles. Professor Pipe described the Venturer autonomous car project and showed how although the technological issues are crucial there are many other aspects to be considered. These include human

THE VERDICT... The final word goes to the presenters and exhibitors themselves. Neil Sandhu from Sick UK commented: “The reason why people are here is to learn, and I believe that the ability to give people the opportunity to sit in the seminars and listen to the keynotes is a key factor why this show is such a success. There’s something for everybody; you can learn about some of the basics, you can learn about the latest advanced technologies and you can see a lot of the advanced technologies available today.” Alastair Slater, from Stemmer Imaging, said: “People are learning a lot from the seminars and also from meeting the suppliers. They are able to get a lot of information quickly.” Barry Long from Optel was impressed by the range of different industries covered by visitors: “I’ve seen people from markets as varied as automotive, foods and pharmaceutical. I think it’s a great meeting place,” he said. More visitors, a high quality, engaged audience, happy exhibitors and new business relationships being established mean that the UKIVA Machine Conference and Exhibition is cementing itself as a well-respected event.
