FEATURE HILLHEAD EXHIBITION PREVIEW

The quarrying, construction and recycling industries will gather at the Hillhead Quarry, Buxton on 26-28 June 2018. Here’s what you can expect to see...

T

he countdown to what is said to be the biggest quarrying exhibition of its

kind in the world has begun. With 525 companies booked into Hillhead 2018, the event will be 10% larger than ever before. Show director Richard Bradbury said:

“Growth has come from additional outdoor space created at the top end of the site and the Registration Pavilion, which has doubled in size and will host 90 companies this year. A record number of demonstrations are also being planned and we look forward to opening our doors to the construction and quarrying industry in the last week of June.” This year, the Institute of Quarrying (IQ)

– the international professional body for the mineral extractives industry – is sponsoring a new online planning tool, ‘Engage’, as well as taking a stand at the exhibition (stand RB26). ‘Engage’ has been introduced by the

show’s organisers to help visitors more effectively plan their time at Hillhead. The new, easy-to-use web tool helps the visitor to build a wish list of exhibitors to visit, along with the option to pre-book appointments, and recommends ‘not to be missed’ show features. The location of the IQ stand will be right

at the heart of the Registration area. IQ is encouraging both members and non- members to visit the stand in order to discover the latest membership and skills developments available. The working demonstration areas are

what Hillhead is known for and there are four separate areas this year: Quarry face for large excavators, face shovels, hydraulic breakers, wheel loaders and dumptrucks

Working demonstration areas are what Hillhead is known for

Man Engine visitor attraction - Britain's largest mechanical puppet. Powered by a Volvo L220 wheel loader and recently voted the UK's Best Arts Project, the 10m high ‘miner’ will be in residence for the duration of the event. Bradbury said: “We are very excited by

the changes we have made at the top end of the site to accommodate more exciting working demonstrations which are synonymous with Hillhead, and the Man Engine will provide a spectacular focal point to the area.” Companies already booked in the expanded area include, among others: Weir Minerals Europe , MDS International, Red Rhino, Rees Machinery Group, MEKA Crushing and Batching Technology, Renault Trucks and Indeco. At Hillhead 2018, JCB will showcase its new X-Series 220X, a 20-tonne tracked excavator model designed to provide maximum operator comfort, durability and reliability in operation (Stand D4). Over a four-year development period,

JCB has undertaken a programme of component and product testing to increase the build quality and reliability of the JCB 220X crawler excavator.

The machines feature a 15% larger cab

with integral ROPS structure, reduced noise levels, a simple user interface and stronger side doors for greater strength and increased protection. CALOR will be exhibiting at Hillhead 2018 to showcase how asphalt plants can cut costs and carbon emissions with the help of liquefied natural gas (LNG). Located on stand PC19, the LNG provider will be discussing how the gas delivers financial and environmental benefits over alternative fuels, such as oil, for sites with high energy requirements, such as asphalt plants. There will be some interactive activities available on the stand for attendees to enjoy too. Sites such as Aggregate Industries’

Colemans Quarry have already made the switch to LNG, cutting fuel costs while reducing CO2 emissions by 17%. Producing 250,000 tonnes of asphalt every year, plant manager Simon Evans explained: “We made the switch to LNG because it is a cleaner source of energy. We were previously using kerosene, but LNG is a more cost-effective product to burn. It also produces a lot less carbon, and reducing the company’s carbon footprint is very important to Aggregate Industries.” Matec will exhibit the 100% mobile

water treatment system (THE CUBE) at Hillhead 2018. From thickener to filter press, the products feature technologies such as TT2 opening system, Gasser Shakers and X Generation filter presses with 21 Bar HPT. You can find the water treatment systems on stand E22. Visitor registration for Hillhead 2018 is now open.
