aradies Eis is employing the benefits of peristaltic pump technology from
Watson-Marlow Fluid Technology Group (WMFTG) to dose hot chocolate sauce into ice cream. The company places its trust in the latest 530 peristaltic pumps and tubing for the reliability that this delicate task requires. Further benefits delivered to Paradies Eis include low pump maintenance requirements, high levels of accuracy and easy operation. For nearly 20 years, Paradies Eis has
been producing almost one million litres of ice cream per year. There are over 50 varieties in the range, from classics such as vanilla to exotic flavours like mango curry. “Varieties with our acclaimed chocolate sauce or a chocolate coating are especially popular at the moment,” said the company’s proprietor Axel Steen. The chocolate has to be dosed at a
temperature of around 60°C into the ice cream, where the liquid mass then hardens again. Peristaltic pumps are used for this application because they have no
valves, seals or moving parts in the fluid path. They suit operation in hygienic environments as the pumped media only comes into contact with a food quality tube. Moreover, media is pumped very gently and with extremely low shear forces, so product quality is never compromised. Peristaltic pumps also offer precision and reproducibility, which help maximise product consistency, along with low maintenance requirements and rapid product changeovers. However, even within the peristaltic
market itself there are differences between pumps, as Steen confirms: “We were previously using a peristaltic pump from another manufacturer, which did not deliver the required precision on a consistent basis, and the insertion of the tube was complicated.” The tube did not locate securely in the track, which meant that the operator often had to make adjustments. Marlow 500 series, a compact range of cased peristaltic pumps for flow rates up to 3.5 l/min. “From the beginning, we noticed that the quality of the WMFTG pump is completely different to that of our previous pumps,” said Steen. “It runs quietly and evenly and performs reliably with a high degree of accuracy. “We have just purchased our third ice cream machine and fitted it with a peristaltic pump from WMFTG,” he continued “The new 530 model is demonstrating the usual quality and reliability.” Depending on the recipe, the pump

With almost 30 years and counting of uninterrupted service for its Lakeside Equipment 60” and 72” screw pumps, operators at the City of Calhoun’s Wastewater Treatment Plant have firmly underlined the benefits of basic preventative maintenance. In 1988, Calhoun’s WWTP (permitted for 16 MGD) first invested in two of Lakeside’s 60”, 75 Hp open screw
pumps, and two 72”, 50 Hp screw pumps. A 60” 75 HP Lakeside screw pump was added in 2012. It was only in 2013, and 2014, that the original 60” screw pumps were finally replaced, but even then, as John Banks, City of Calhoun Wastewater Plant Manager explains, this was more to do with budgetary and long-term planning requirements: “The pumps were only just beginning to wear out, but they were certainly not on their last legs,” he said, “far from it. The original 60” Lakeside Screw Pumps far exceeded their life expectancy”. The average flow at Calhoun is around 5MGD (14-16 MGD during rain events). The treatment plant is a tough, corrosive environment for the Lakeside pumps, which, via three different configurations, run rotationally 24/7 to equal out wear. Consisting of a spiral screw, upper and lower bearings and a drive arrangement, the open screw design uses a torque tube with spiral flights set in an open, inclined concrete trough. Banks said: “The beauty of the Lakeside screw pumps is that there is actually very little maintenance. Once per week we check oil levels and our operators will also monitor the grease levels on the bottom bearing. All very simple - and with Lakeside’s stainless steel tubing, we don’t have to worry about corrosion. These routine checks have seen our screw pumps work very reliably for 25-years-plus, which shows what a good investment they are”. The 530 series pump is operated via an intuitive keypad with large buttons and a clear colour display for easy operation with gloved hands in a production environment. The pumps offers a ±0.5% accuracy and precise speed control range of 2200:1. The pump is also self-priming and capable of dry running, and is simple to operate. This is especially important in a sector such as ice cream, which can witness large seasonal spikes in demand, necessitating the employment of temporary workers. The Bioprene peristaltic pump tubing
used at Paradies Eis, is USP Class VI and FDA regulation 21CFR 177:2600 for contact with aqueous food, at operating temperatures up to 80˚C. The long peristaltic life means stoppages for a tube change are rare events and easily fitted in with general maintenance downtime at the ice cream manufacturing plant.
