CHEMICALS & PHARMACEUTICALS A 360˚ viEw OF CHEMiCAL SUPPLY CHAiNS

The chemical industry is a vital part of the UK’s economy. Tim Doggett, Chief Executive of the Chemical Business Association (CBA), explains the CBA’s role in supporting the chemical supply chain industry

itself as the voice of the country’s chemical supply chain and has provided unwavering dedication and consistent support to its members, which include distributors, manufacturers, traders, warehouse operators, logistics and transport companies in the chemical supply chain, throughout the years. It's this diverse membership that gives the

F

Association a distinct advantage and a unique 360-degree view of the chemical supply chain, along with an extensive and in- depth range of expertise and insight. Considering this, an important aim for the CBA is to raise not only the profile of the chemical supply chain industry it represents, but also of the wider and far-reaching role that chemicals play in society. One of the CBA’s main roles is to lobby on

behalf of its members, and over the years, industry has benefitted significantly from the Association’s interventions. Specifically, its leadership in highlighting and addressing the HGV driver shortage issue in the UK led to the introduction of various short- and medium- term remedies, with the Association continuing to work with various stakeholders towards more long-term solutions. In addition, its lobbying about concerns of

the practicality, workability, and requirement for duplication of testing and costs to implement UK REACH achieved a major

ounded as the British Chemical and Dyestuffs Trading Association almost a century ago, the CBA has established

breakthrough when DEFRA announced it would consult on extending the deadlines for submission of data, and explore a new model that would be both workable and affordable. Besides lobbying, the CBA offers advocacy

representing businesses in both Whitehall and Westminster, as well as Brussels, where it has effective working relationships with policymakers, regulators, and legislators. Additionally, the combined experience and

capabilities of the Association and its members enable it to play an active and instrumental role with policymakers and, in the UK, it works closely with and engages at all levels of Government and bodies such as the Health and Safety Executive. The Association is also in discussions with

both the Indian High Commission and the German Embassy to promote trade between the UK and these two economies. In addition, it collaborates with other Associations and is an active member of the Alliance of Chemical Associations (ACA). When appropriate, it works closely with the Chemical Industries Association (CIA) and British Coatings Federation (BCF) because, while these organisations have very different remits, there are several areas of mutual interest. The CBA is also an active member of the International Chemical Trade Association (ICTA). The CBA offers practical support to its

members in the form of workshops and seminars. These cover a wide range of topical issues, including compliance, regulations, and

best practice, with a key focus on the promotion of proactive measures to ensure adherence to laws. In addition, the Association offers Dangerous

Goods Safety Adviser (DGSA) services, as well as training and support on everything from the carriage of dangerous goods through to the Control of Major Accident Hazards (COMAH). To further support its members, it provides a

helpdesk which offers assistance on everything from technical advice through to questions on importing and exporting and customs formalities. The Association is internationally recognised

for its expertise in chemical security, as well as for providing workshops on transport site security and countering the threat of terrorism. Furthermore, it provides representation and consultancy services to various overseas security and government agencies. Environmental regulations are a constant

challenge for the chemical supply chain industry and contrary to belief, the chemical industry is heavily involved and instrumental in finding solutions to solve the problems of climate change. Cognisant of its responsibilities, the CBA will

endeavour to maintain its position as a thought leader and influencer in areas such as science, innovation, and investment, which are integral and vital to the success of the industry.
