FEATURE UK AD & WORLD BIOGAS EXPO PREVIEW
Technological innovation in AD will be a key topic at UK AD & World Biogas Expo 2018, the world’s largest dedicated AD and biogas tradeshow. Our preview explains more...
T
his is an exciting time for the anaerobic digestion (AD) industry, with
significant policy developments reinvigorating the sector. In the UK, new higher tariffs for renewable heat are leading to the development of up to 40 new biomethane projects, while there are exciting prospects for significant foreign investment into on-farm AD plants - the UK’s biggest AD growth opportunity. This will drive competition and prompt an increase in the uptake of new technology. The expo, jointly organised by the Anaerobic Digestion & Bioresources Association (ADBA) and the World Biogas Association (WBA), takes place at the NEC in Birmingham on 11th and 12th July 2018. It will feature hundreds of exhibitors showcasing the latest technology to help AD operators find the innovations that will give their business a competitive edge. ADBA Chief Executive, Charlotte Morton,
said: "We are seeing a paradigm shift as AD is finally starting to get recognition for all that it delivers and attracting both long-term investment and policy commitment. Those ready to take advantage of this shift will reap the most benefits. “There has been a real growth in AD
innovation, seen particularly in our own AD & Biogas Industry Awards, where we have seen entries featuring exceptional projects and innovation this year.” The impact of optimisation on a plant’s bottom line can be huge, with digesters operating just below capacity sometimes losing thousands of pounds a month in revenue. Equally, a minor drop in temperature can result in much higher methane loss while control of the bacterial environment makes a major difference to the quality of output. The extensive conference programme at
UK AD & World Biogas Expo 2018 features eminent speakers from companies leading the way in technological advances that prove the commercial benefits of operational enhancements. Highlights of the programme include: • “Improved biogas quality as a result of a controlled calcium nitrate dosage in anaerobic fermenters revealed by molecular analyses” – Dr Marina Ettl, Application and Product Development Director, Yara GmbH & Co.

OPTIMUM PERFORMANCE EQUALS MAXIMUM REWARD
Visitors to the Expo will be able to celebrate success stories, and learn about the latest research and potential to grow their businesses, while putting AD firmly on the global map
• “Optimisation of the 3-stage membrane process” – Dr Juergen Kube, Head of Technology, Future Biogas • “Economical and Agricultural benefits for farmers applying organic matter to soils” – Dr Alberto Confalonieri, Head of the Technical Committee, Italian Composting and Biogas Association (CIC) According to organisers, a record number of representatives from the water industry are expected to attend the expo. The event presents the water industry with the perfect opportunity to achieve its goal of energy self-sufficiency - with products and systems to increase the generation of renewable energy. Including the latest in pumps, mixers,
valves, tanks, flares instrumentation and much more, the expo is an international who’s who under one roof. It gives water companies and contractors a hands-on look at what would be best for new digesters and how existing sludge tanks can benefit from: • A boost in biogas yields • Reduced maintenance • Reduced carbon emissions • Reduced energy costs • Improved health and safety Among the many exhibitors at the show
is DMT Environmental Technology, who will reveal how its membrane technology has produced a quarter of a billion cubic metres of biomethane, which is enough green gas to heat 227,000 homes and power thousands of vehicles worldwide. Furthermore, the firm will announce the introduction of its first UK-based sales and service team. Visitors to stand D601 will learn how 30
international plant operators, including the UK’s first commercial biomethane to grid facility which opened in 2012 at Poundbury, have benefited from DMT’s Carborex MS membrane technology.
Housed in a compact, modular, containerised unit, it boasts an uptime of 98% and upgrades biogas to a methane concentration of 99%, resulting in a higher yield. Heading up the new team, UK Business
Director Stephen McCulloch said: “Converting organic matter into renewable gas also brings considerable carbon savings – focusing on efficiency and effectiveness, DMT’s worldwide projects have achieved savings in excess of 642,382 tonnes CO2 equivalent, equal to 0.14% of the UK’s total greenhouse gas emissions. This is the same as taking 20% of all buses in the UK off the road, or all fishing vessels in the UK off the seas.” McCulloch outlined his plans for the UK
team: “As well as expanding the UK market, we will be increasing the scope of our supply, including offering finance options. In addition, we have fine-tuned our offering and are issuing a five-year membrane guarantee on our Carborex MS upgrading technology.” The Expo is expected to attract over
3,000 attendees and more than 200 exhibitors from around the world. There will also be over 100 speakers, including key personnel from Ofwat and heads of bioresources from UK water companies. AD has enormous potential as a source of renewable energy, set to be further boosted by the UK introducing mandatory food waste collections. However, it is critical for the industry to reduce costs to make it competitive against alternative green energy sources. Technology and process optimisation are imperative to this process, making UK AD & World Biogas Expo 2018 the place to unlock the potential of the global AD market.
