SUPPLEMENT POWER ELECTRONICS NEW OFF-LINE SWITCHER ICS FOR NON-ISOLATED APPLICATIONS P

ower Integrations has introduced its LinkSwitch-TN2

off-line switcher IC for non- isolated applications with up to 360mA output current. The new device, which may be configured as a buck, buck-boost or a non- isolated flyback converter, delivers high accuracy, high efficiency and

good no-load performance. The device incorporates new safety features including input and output over-voltage protection and a rugged MOSFET with a 725V breakdown voltage, offering robust output short-circuit and over- temperature protection against line surges and swells. Applications include appliances, HVAC, industrial, home automation (IOT) and metering systems. These ICs feature voltage

regulation of more than -/+ 3%. This high level of accuracy removes the need for post regulators, minimising the BOM, increasing efficiency and reducing size. The new IC requires just 20 additional components to complete a buck

converter, and may be configured to use off-the-shelf inductors, further reducing cost and supply chain complexity. The new devices are efficient in

low-power applications – above 80% in 12V, 120mA (1.4W) buck designs for example. This IC typically provides good efficiency across the entire load range while consuming less than 30mW no- load in a buck arrangement and less than 10mW when configured as a non-isolated flyback. This is a key tool for addressing

Total Energy Consumption (TEC) regulations, which prescribe an energy budget limit over a range of operating modes. www.power.com

HIGH POWER DENSITY VEHICLE-ACCESS SOLUTION FOR SMART KEYS AND WEARABLES

A low-power Passive Entry/Passive Start (PEPS) solution has been unveiled by Microchip: The ATA5700 and ATA5702 are primarily intended for use in battery powered applications such as smart keys (i.e. PEPS) and complementary car access via mobile devices, smartphones and wearables where the power consumption is one of the key requirements. Key benefits of the new devices include ultra-low power

consumption, good key localisation accuracy and built-in counter relay (“man-in-the-middle”) attack protection measures. Car theft based on relay attacks of vehicles equipped with a PEPS system is becoming one of the top security

concerns of automakers. The two new devices have a built-in Low Frequency (LF) vector calculation unit that allows the implementation of effective relay attack countermeasures at no additional cost. The new devices also feature good low frequency sensitivity, enabling convenience features such as

customised welcome-lighting upon approaching the vehicle or automatic “walk-away locking” of the vehicle – in a range up to 10 meters. The power consumption for this “always on feature” is tripling the battery lifetime in the highest sensitivity mode. The devices offer high key localisation accuracy, which is critical to accurately distinguish whether a key fob is located inside or outside the vehicle and to comply with accuracy requirements of insurance companies. In addition, the devices contain an open-source, zero-cost licence immobiliser protocol based on AES-128 that enables interoperability, allowing large volume customers to deploy second sourcing strategies. www.atmel.com/devices/ATA5700.aspx

A 480W rated DRB480-24-1 DIN rail mount AC-DC power supply has been released by TDK Corporation with a power density of 6Watts per inch3. With a narrow width, the DRB480 is ideally suited for enclosures and cabinets where space is limited. With an average efficiency of greater than 87%, the solution meets ErP standards. It is housed in a robust metal enclosure and has a depth of 124mm, a height of 125mm and a width of 84mm. The power supply can operate from a wide

range 90 - 264Vac input allowing use globally. The DRB480-24-1 has 24V 20A output and features a DC OK signal in addition to an LED indicator. www.tdk-lambda.com

Littelfuse Inc. has introduced its first varistor series designed for high power applications that can operate at ambient temperatures up to 1250

C with 2500V

isolation voltage. The HMOV Varistor Series’ high operating temperature is enabled through the use of a new silicone coating technology. The combination of high operating temperature, high surge current absorption of up to 10kA (8/20µs), reliability confirmed by a 1000-cycle thermal stress test, and high isolation voltage (2500V) make this a high performance radial-leaded varistor series. www.littelfuse.com

USB-C BUCK-BOOST BATTERY CHARGERS SUPPORT BIDIRECTIONAL POWER DELIVERY

Two new USB-C buck-boost battery chargers that support bidirectional power delivery in ultrabooks, tablets, power banks and other mobile products have been introduced by Intersil Corporation. The single-chip ISL9238 and ISL9238A battery chargers are designed using the company’s R3 modulation technology to extend battery life and deliver acoustic noise-free operation, superior light-load efficiency and ultra-fast transient response. Both devices operate in forward buck, boost

or buck-boost mode to fast charge mobile battery packs with up to 4-cell Li-ion batteries. They also support USB 3.1 On-The- Go (OTG) with 5V/20V reverse buck, boost or

buck-boost mode to deliver power out of a USB- C port for charging external devices such as smartphones, headphones or virtual reality goggles. At maximum power, both ICs provide 20V at 5A to the USB-C port for delivery of power up to 100W over a reversible USB Type-C connector cable. The ISL9238A features the same capabilities as the ISL9238, but also includes a different SMBus address for OEMs that want to use both ICs to design systems with dual USB-C ports. In charging mode, these devices take input

power from a wide range of DC power sources, including AC/DC charger adapters, USB power delivery (PD) ports and any travel adapter. www.intersil.com/products/isl9238
