NEW CONNECTOR SOLUTIONS FOR INTEGRATED INDUSTRY


The emergence of Integrated Industry concepts such as Industry 4.0 has led to an increased appetite for energy to power the growing number of components and subsystems involved in industrial automation. In addition to signals and data, more and more power must also be transmitted. To meet these requirements, the Harting Technology Grouphas collaborated with a number of other connector suppliers on the development of a new industry standard with the objective of creating manufacturer-neutral mating faces for industrial connectors. Here Kevin Canham from Harting has more on the latest offerings


T


he resulting new Standard (IEC 61076-2- 111) forms the basis for future M12 power


connector solutions and has also led to the emergence of a new universal mating face with L-coding. This standardisation effort offers users investment security for the future and establishes the M12 in the power connector segment. The new 5-pole L-coding device, known as the M12 Power, has a power rating of 0.75kW at 63V and 16A, making it ideally suited for small servo motors, field distribution boxes, fieldbus controlled I/O boxes, network devices and valve applications. Besides the classic M12 industrial automation


applications, the transportation market could also be addressed by this power variant. In other words, the L-coded M12 will emerge as the future standard device connection that could completely replace the existing M12 A- coded and 7/8-inch solutions in these sectors by offering a uniform and universal IP65/67 power connector. The M12 Power’s smaller build is also fully in line with current trends towards miniaturisation. In addition to its impressive performance and


small size, the M12 Power’s portfolio also includes versatility in terms of installation and interfacing. On the cable side, the company’s HARAX IDC connectors and crimp terminals are available for straight versions as male and female variants. These options feature a 360° shielding concept that is already being used in the company’s Slim Design series. As a result, these devices take into account market requirements that go even beyond the requirements of the relevant IEC 61076-2-111 standard.


M12 CABLING SOLUTIONS The M12 product range supports popular M12 industry standard coding options including A-code for sensor, DeviceNet and power cabling, B-code for PROFIBUS, D-code for 10/100 Mbit/s and X-code for 1/10 Gbit/s Ethernet as well as the L- code 63 V DC power devices. Users can choose from pre-assembled


compact overmoulded patch leads for layout-defined volume installations or

quick-delivery, pre-assembled custom “push & go” patch leads using standard cable connector piece parts for small- to medium-volume installations.


ON-SITE TERMINATION For rapid on-site field termination in tight spaces or trunking drag-through applications, the repeatable, fault-limiting preLink IDC termination system, assembled using a double-jaw hand press tool, is also available for D and X-coded male cable connectors. Male and female cable connectors are


available in either crimp termination styles, normally preferred for high-vibration environments such as on-train installations, or

hand-tightened HARAX IDC termination for low-vibration applications. Slim-design housing versions for high-density installations are provided in crimp termination for A, D and X-coded mating designs in straight or right angle formats. An important new development in this


range, which will shortly be available from stock from Harting, is the M12 PushPull mating slim-design A, D and X-coded male cable connectors, which allow the highest possible M12 mating density for fixing to appropriate high-port-density Ethernet switches or sensor/actuator I/O modules. Such parts offer the added feature of simple tactile handling which provides audible feedback on mating. Where panel mounted PushPull mating parts


are not fitted on such devices, suitable PushPull to threaded M12 adapters are available, allowing existing installations to benefit from the improved PushPull handling features. PushPull panel feed-through D and X-


coded female cable connectors are available which are backwards mating compatible with the standard screw-threaded mating M12 connectors. This gives users the option of continuing to use existing screw threaded styles, as well as upgrading to new M12 connectors with PushPull locking. The extensive M12 connector range includes


panel feed-through gender changers, including a female-to-female version typically used in the transportation market for through-bulkhead connections: for example, linking external inter-carriage jumper assemblies to internal carriage wiring systems. The most recent M12 range extension


includes straight panel feed-through X-code female cable connectors, which can be supplied as single-ended patch leads to customers’ length requirements. These are particularly beneficial for transportation rail-carriage through-bulkhead installation cabling.
