CONTRACT MANUFACTURING FEATURE

product. These stages will include: Receipt of components; Kitting for production; Surface mount assembly; Conventional assembly; Test and Box build. Circuit Solutions quality objectives include improving manufacturing quality. Inspection at all stages has had a proven positive impact on these objectives.

4. Investing in technology A CEM’s investment policy is a good indicator of their commitment to growing their business along and staying abreast of technology. At Circuit Solutions, they have recently invested in a new selective soldering machine that achieves consistent solder joints for plated through hole components. The company has also invested in a new X-ray machine with high resolution and 3D capabilities for boards with micro BGAs and QFNs. This machine ensures the ability of a CEM’s inspection team to fully inspect the solder joints under a component for the solder joints that are not visible and also includes viewing the solder joint consistency down the barrel of the component ie connector.

5. Strength in adversity Contract electronics manufacturers are regularly faced with unforeseen

challenges – how they handle these is telling. The UK leaving the EU, for example, may effect deliveries from the European suppliers in the future and could result in higher tariffs. There has already been some impact over the last 4 years due to Brexit uncertainty, although generally manufacturing has remained robust. This may be classified as a risk but in the future this may open up opportunities to the world market. The other potential impact is and continues to be with the Coronavirus outbreak. It is having an impact with the supply of electronic parts particularly from China. The measures the Chinese government has put in place has helped but there are currently longer lead times for delivery of components. The above are just a couple of examples of what adversity can happen outside the control of a CEM, as mentioned previously Circuit Solutions strive to work closely with their customers buyers to solve problems such as these and with their in- depth knowledge and experience with procurement of components, this helps to overcome these adversities.

Manufacturing sustainability: One final point, manufacturing

sustainability is a subject that CEMs should address on a regular basis thanks to tighter environmental legislation. As a company, Circuit Solutions works to comply with substance restriction requirements of the RoHS Recast Directive 2011/65/EU including as described in Commission Delegate Directive (EU) 2015/863.
