FEATURE INTERCONNECTION

DRAMATICALLY INCREASE THE TRANSMISSION DISTANCE OF CXP TRANSMISSION CONNECTIONS

solution using Power over CoaXPress (PoCXP) can overcome this challenge. The CXP repeater can leverage

oaXPress is a digital interface standard, developed for high-speed image

data transmission in machine vision applications. Adopted by the JIIA in 2011, the new standard, V2.0, was released and ratified by the JIIA in June 2019. The new standard incorporates speeds

up to CXP-12 and can achieve data rates up to 12.5Gbps over a single coax cable. It is also scalable for multiple cables, for example, 4 cables can be configured to support a data rate of up to 50Gbps and 8 cables can provide data rates of up to 100Gpbs etc.

Mass production techniques are under ever-increasing pressure to maximise throughput to meet worldwide product demand whilst reducing product cost and where high resolution, high-speed industrial image processing is required, CXP-12 plays an important role in enabling production lines to increase the speed of the line, whilst maintaining product quality.

As with all data transmission

systems, CoaXPress has an optimum recommended connection length which is dependent on cable type and data rate selection. Sometimes these connection lengths are not enough to meet the requirements for ideal camera deployment within a factory layout. To overcome this issue Cambridge Electronic Industries began work on the

development of a CXP repeater. Qualified by the JIIA in March 2020, the CXP repeater has been designed to dramatically increase the transmission distance of CXP transmission connections and can be installed with minimal disruption to the factory layout. An innovative product providing a solution to the increasing level of demand in mass production facilities, using the CoaXPress standard. Although initially designed for machine vision applications, the repeater has seen interest in the Broadcast industries who are seeking to take advantage of the high data rates inherent in the CXP standard along with the increased transmission distance provided by the repeater. This type of solution is of particular interest for broadcasting sporting events, where large venue sizes will dictate camera positioning which can often exceed the distances supported by the recommended cable lengths. Whilst there are Fibre optic extenders available which support the CXP-6 standard, the challenge in this type of application revolves around the venues themselves. Due to the ‘spectator centric’ stadium design and their resulting power distribution architecture, they often have limited power sources for equipment which prohibits the use of a fibre extender. A copper-based CoaXPress

PoCXP, as it requires just 460mW at the maximum data rate CXP-12, which greatly extends a copper-based solution without the need for an additional external power source. By using cameras which support PoCXP, the client can position the far-reach PoCXP cameras regardless of the power distribution limitations of venues. The repeater itself uses Micro BNC connectors, which were introduced as part of the new V2.0 standard. The repeater is also available with standard BNC connectors for all speeds up to CXP-12 and DIN 1.0/2.3 a for all speeds up to CXP-6. The repeater has a small and robust design, meaning that it can be mounted within stadiums with no obstruction to spectators or infrastructure. It is a plug and play device and so can be easily installed in any location in a matter of seconds without any need for configuration, as it is designed to work at all CXP speeds. It is also retrofittable to older systems with pre-existing cabling, allowing for the incremental upgrading of the vision systems as and when required. Cambridge Electronic Industries are designers and manufacturers of connectors and bespoke cable assemblies. Their design team have pioneered new connector designs and standards, providing high specification connectors and cable assemblies for 3G, 6G and 12G for a diverse range of industries. At the forefront of technology, they continuously innovate and work with key stakeholders to provide technical solutions.
