SUB-5MW, IEEE 802.15.4Z ULTRA-WIDEBAND TRANSMITTER CHIP I


mec has developed an IEEE 802.15.4z impulse-radio ultra-


wideband (IR-UWB) transmitter chip. Fabricated in 28nm CMOS (with an occupied core area of only 0.15mm²), it has been custom- developed to achieve a record-low power consumption of 4.9 milliwatt (mW) in a standard-compliant operation. It is also the first sub- 5mW IR-UWB transmitter chip to comply with the newly released IEEE 802.15.4z standard for even more


accurate and secure UWB ranging measurements. The chip’s digital polar


transmitter architecture reduces the IC’s power consumption to only 4.9mW. Additionally, injection- locked ring oscillator (ILRO) technology allows even greater power savings – by enabling fast duty cycling between the IR-UWB transmitter’s signal bursts and within a packet, allowing parts of the transmitter to be turned off


between those pulses. The chip complies with the


worldwide spectrum regulations that dictate in which frequencies the UWB transmitter can emit – as to avoid interference with other wireless services. To that end, the imec researchers propose an asynchronous pulse shaping design that meets the international spectral emission regulations in the 3-10GHz bands. www.imec-int.com

RENESAS AUTOMOTIVE SOC FUNCTIONAL SAFETY TECHNOLOGIES


Renesas Electronics has developed processor technologies for automotive systems-on-chip (SoCs) used in applications such as advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and autonomous


driving (AD) systems that aim to optimise both performance and power efficiency while supporting a high level of functional safety. This development includes a convolutional neural network (CNN) hardware accelerator core that delivers 60.4 trillion operations per second (TOPS) and a power efficiency of 13.8 TOPS/W along with safety mechanisms for fast detection of and response to random hardware failures. This makes it possible to create a highly power efficient detection mechanism with a high failure detection rate. A mechanism has also been integrated that allows software tasks with different safety levels to operate in parallel on the SoC without interfering with each other, thereby bolstering functional safety for ASIL D control. These technologies have been applied in the company’s latest R-Car V3U automotive SoC. www.renesas.com

Microchip Technology Inc. has introduced its high-side current sense amplifiers featuring a low offset for AEC-Q100 Grade 0 qualified high-side current sense amplifier devices. AEC- Q100 qualified, the MCP6C02 amplifier is offered in both a Grade 1 6-pin SOT-23 package and a Grade 0 8-pin 3x3 VDFN package. Delivering a maximum offset error of only 12µV, the VDFN package offers a low offset voltage for a Grade 0 high-side current sense amplifier.
